  • Peaceful family-friendly Drôme campsite on the Oule riverbanks
  • La Motte-Chalancon five minutes’ drive; Les Barons Perchés 45 minutes
  • Gourmet restaurant with live music; sports courts and swimming pool
Escape the Mistral winds and summertime heat of the Mediterranean coast and head inland to L’Ondine de Provence in the Drôme, where breezes generally keep things cool, trees bring plenty of shade to pitches and you'll have access to a brace of beaches on the River Oule. And there's plenty more to discover at this family-friendly site, starting with a standout restaurant for would-be gourmets and live music at aperitif time. It's open in high season (and some other weekends) for an enticing menu of pizzas or mussels and fries, but you can also go down the self-catering route by using the shared barbecue for dinner and pre-ordering your breakfast or daily baguette from reception. In July and August, a friendly on-site team organises fun for the kids, and you can keep toddlers happy at the adventure playground and entertain teens with a bit of gentle competition on the tennis, volleyball or pétanque courts. Should you need to cool down after all that rushing about, take a dip in the on-site pool or wander down to the beach for a refreshing splash in the Oule. If all that’s not quite enough to keep everyone happy, have a hike out to the Pas des Ondes lakes (25 minutes’ walk) for a spot of fishing, pedalo-ing or following nature trails through the rugged and spectacular Drôme countryside.

Local attractions

Clustered around its medieval church, the gorgeous village of La Motte-Chalancon (five minutes’ drive) is a hub of outdoor activities including hiking, horse riding and mountain biking on marked trails. In summer, there’s a lively café scene in shaded squares, as well as a couple of smart delis selling delicious local foods and wines. Learn all about the Provençal night skies while looking through the powerful telescope at Observatoire des Baronnies Provençales (half an hour). Nature lovers can often watch vultures playing in the thermals from the Observatoire Vautours en Baronnies (15 minutes) atop steep cliffs at Saint-May, but it will take a bit more patience to spot the beavers now living on the River Oule. If the kids are proving resistant to wildlife spotting, get them out into the fresh air with a scamper around treetop climbing courses at Les Barons Perchés (45 minutes), while more adventurous sorts might like the challenging cliff-side climbing course at Via Ferrata le Pas de l’Echelle (10 minutes).
