- Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes five minutes’ drive and Orcières 20 minutes
- Pétanque and volleyball courts; bike rides or hikes straight from site
About as far away from the hustle of everyday life as you’re likely to get, Camping du Château has spacious, neatly mown grass pitches (electric hook-ups optional) under a canopy of trees. At five minutes’ drive from the alpine village of Chabottes in the Hautes-Alpes, this is a peaceful place where you can recharge your batteries in the middle of greenery, safe in the knowledge that there’s plenty to do locally if the kids ask for a day trip or two.
The grounds are neatly planted with shrubs and flowers, and there are mountain views from various points around the site. Amenities stretch to a communal freezer to keep your food fresh, washing-up sinks and a spotless shower block; activities-wise, there’s a pétanque court, volleyball court and swings for the kids.
If you’re looking for kids’ clubs and nightly entertainment, this is not the spot for you, as Camping du Château is all about relaxing and communing with nature. However, local facilities are available: there’s a bakery, ice cream parlour, cheese shop, convenience store and a couple of restaurants all within 20 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions
A ski resort in winter, Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes (five minutes’ drive) morphs into a vast alpine playground in summer, with hiking and mountain biking routes as well as paragliding and canyoning opportunities for hardcore sporty types. Ancelle (10 minutes) has walking trails through forest and alpine pastures, and Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol (20 minutes) also has a plethora of hiking and mountain biking trails for all levels in the Champsaur-Valgaudemar Valley.
Orcières (20 minutes) is home of summer festivals like the MTB Games as well as gateway to climbing in the Écrins National Park (also 20 minutes). If you want to raise the adrenaline levels, try the via ferrata climbing course at the Barrage du Sautet (40 minutes) or zipwiring over mountain peaks at Les Orres Speedline (an hour).
Kids with you? They may not be ready for the zipwire, so take them instead to Jungle Laye (10 minutes) to build their nerve on treetop rope courses. Younger kids will be content with meeting the reindeer and Shetland ponies at Creuzet Animal Park (20 minutes).
