In a place called the Happy Valley, and accessed via the Sunshine Motorway… that’s got to be a combo that raises a smile. Camping La Vallée Heureuse is a pleasingly spacious nine-hectare family-oriented site five minutes’ drive from Orgon and a similarly short hop from the afore-mentioned A7 motorway (handy news for those seeking a convenient stopover when heading north or south). Don’t plan to move on too quickly though, for there’s much to detain you around these parts for a little while. Just a couple of minutes’ walk away is a lake for walks and watersports, and the Durance river runs nearby too. You’re in the scenic surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park for outdoorsy pursuits, with Avignon, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence all less than an hour away for time in town. Time on site is well spent, too – have a swim at the outdoor pool, play pétanque or table tennis or snaffle a shaded spot from which to gaze out over the gorgeous views. A pizzeria, bread order service and a bar with ice cream provide plenty of bits to snack on, and there’s a programme of activities and entertainment for all ages in the summer months.

Liked: Quiet clean site, nice pool and spotless facilities. Bar restaurant was open at the weekends with limited but good value options. Less than 10 min walk to station and 15 mins to town. Nice little place one you get off the main road. We didn’t pay for WiFi, so very limited access.

Disliked: Very picky, but slighly hotter water for showers and washing up would be good.

Local attractions

The surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park have much to explore – walks, bike rides and horseback treks are popular ways to take in the rocky vistas, vineyards and olive groves. For some completely different (but equally scenic) walks and activities, drive for 45 minutes or so to the wetlands of the Camargue Regional Natural Park. Delve into the region’s past with visits to some of its historic sites: the riverside medieval fortess Château de Tarascon and the Bronze Age village of bories in Gordes are both around 40 minutes away by car, and the Saint Paul de Mausole monastery (where Vincent Van Gogh painted some of his most famed works) is around 20 minutes away. Should you fancy wandering around town for a while, it’ll take you around half an hour to reach Avignon for museums, UNESCO-listed sites and excellent wine cellars (Châteauneuf-du-Pape is nearby, for starters). Marseille and Aix-en-Provence are both less than an hour away by car.
