- On a riverbank with private beach for swimming
- Among spectacular mountain views under 10 kilometres from Castellane
- Pools, fitness trail, wild swimming and café-restaurant with terrace
'A fantastic start to our French adventure' were early feedback words on this smashing site in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. And when you clap your very own eyes on it and its spectacular setting, you may want to ensure your French adventure here has a middle, an end and a copious amount of time off work as well as its fantastic start.
Huttopia Camping Gorges du Verdon is on the banks of the Verdon river, between the Alps and the Côte d'Azur a short meander by car from the handsome town of Castellane in south-east France. It has its own private beach (hurrah) and stacks of facilities for your days: on site: you could tackle pétanque or basketball at the site courts, take it easier with table football or table tennis, or stride forth to the fitness trail to make your muscled moves.
When you need to take it somewhat easier (recommended after all that activity), there's a heated pool and an adjoining paddling pool for the family to splash around in, and a spacious area next to the water for sunbathing and general idling – mountain views included as standard. Idling is also essential at the café-restaurant, which has free wifi and a terrace overlooking the river for dreamy and/or surfing hours while the kids are entertained at the summer club running on weekday morns. Magic shows, games nights and (also hurrah) open-air film screenings are part of the extensive evening entertainment programme.
But of course one must get out and about into these splendid surrounds too. A wild swimming area in the Verdon is next to the site to start you off, and the site locale is close to canoe trips and whitewater rafting excursions nearby on the river and through the Verdon gorge canyons. Hikers have trails directly around the site or in the surrounding Verdon Regional Natural Park; more watersports are available on the beaut waters of Lac de Castillon, within easy day trip distance.

Local attractions
You won't find yourself thronged by crowds with a trip to the pretty town of Castellane just under 10 kilometres away: this high-up town upstream of the Gorges du Verdon and 724 metres above sea level is the least populated commune in all of France. Go to have a potter around its scenic surrounds or (and) use the town as a base for mountain and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence hikes, using the GR 4 route passing through the town on its way from Royan to Grasse.
If it's watery adventures you seek, river swimming is next to the site and you can tackle canoeing, whitewater rafting and canyoning at the Gorges du Verdon from Castellane. Swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing and canoeing are all available at Lac de Castillon, about 35 minutes away.
Or just take to car, bike or feet to soak up the scenery and sights of this lovely land, from lavender fields to mountain passes, and ancient buildings to deep blue waters. Paragliding is available nearby too – you'll def want to have your camera at the ready – and if you fancy some spotting of celebs, the swish seaside town of Saint-Tropez is a couple of hours to the south.
