  • Shaded family-friendly site on the outskirts of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
  • Walking distance from the underground church and canoeing or kayaking
  • Riverside beach with a snack bar/restaurant on site; canoeing nearby
En route to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne to explore its 12th-century underground church? To enjoy an aperitif or two under the ancient lime trees? To hire out a canoe or a kayak and paddle downstream on the river Dronne? Camping Paradis Aubeterre sur Dronne is on the outskirts of the historic Charente village, just 15 minutes’ walk from its central cobbled streets and red tiles, making it an excellent base for all of the above. The scenic French village already sets the scene for this family-friendly site. The grounds are level, grassy, calm and sprinkled with shade. The river runs past the site, resulting in a relaxing sandy beach that has supervised swimming in high season and a riverside snack bar/restaurant that’s open for over eight hours and closes at midnight. If the beach has you wanting to see more of the river, there’s a canoeing and kayaking centre just five minutes’ walk from the site. Église souterraine Saint-Jean dite monolithe, the village's underground church, is just an extra 10 minutes on foot from there. For those of you who want to explore further on foot, hiking and biking trails also surround the village. There are many markets around for sourcing local handiwork or delicacies with the kids or friends. As for any family guests, if there’s a day where you want some adults-only time, the site runs its PIKI club (named after the site mascot) for children of at least six years old.

Liked: Everything! Location, staff and facilities all excellent. Great venue for family and friends meet ups, dogs enjoyed it too. Decent power on pitch (10A), didn't use site WiFi. Level shady pitch, choose your own.

Disliked: No seats on toilets ( the French way , I know...) No water on pitch but tap very close by.

Liked: Easy check in, receptionist very friendly and spoke basic English. Basically told to pick any pitch we wanted, which was easy enough. Facilities all good, warm water, clean. The beach was brilliant, clean river, kids loved it. Little platform for them to climb onto and jump off. The wier was great fun with lots of locals jumping off it and the diving board was a nice touch too. We walked into the local town during the day and visited the underground church, I am not big on my history but it was amazing and well worth the visit (2 adults, 8 yr old & 3 yr old - €19). Went in the evening for dinner and the Prego Pizzeria was lovely. Be warned, it's a steep walk up! We had only booked 1 night as we were planning moving around but we stayed an extra night. We were given a free drink token to use at the bar but we never got around to trying the bar.

Disliked: Only bins were out the front, not the end of the world but a bit annoying.

Liked: The campsite was in a very beautiful area. The toilet and showers were kept clean and spotless,by very hard working staff.

Disliked: Unfortunately a very disappointing stay, there was a massive lack of security, so anyone could enter the site, including us, until we realised and returned to the shop/desk to check in, we were just given a band on our arm, that actually had no idea the point of this. And just told to go find a pitch !!, there were rules in the campsite leaflet we were given, no one seemed bothered or interested in following any safety rules, dogs roaming the campsite free of leads, causing a nuisance, not everyone likes dogs. That’s why it said all dogs on leads at all times, bbq being lit, when it says no bbqs, no naked flames, no open fires, guessing this is all for the safety of campers, and the trees all around. But all disregarded. There was travellers that were on site, caused a lot of issues, police came and removed them. But yet again like I said, because of the fact there was no proper security on site. The noise levels were also an issue, screaming and shouting till early hours of morning, one two three times till 5am. All in all a very disappointing visit, and a shame because the site had potential to be something great !!!

Local attractions

While it’s easy to while away lots of time in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, those of you who want to take your exploration further will be in for a treat. Taste your way around the vineyards of Cognac (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive) and walk away with a bottle of its iconic brandy. Châteauneuf-sur-Charente (50 minutes) is also surrounded by vineyards, but it’s the hiking trails that take centre stage. There are limestone cliffs, climbing sites, caves and river islands surrounding this location. In Montbron (an hour), pick up the hiking trail GR 4 too, once you’ve toured the 12th-century church and the 15th-century castle at least. In Angoulême (50 minutes), expect gorgeous views over the valley below and everything from city ramparts and Romanesque architecture to paper and fine art museums. Périgueux (an hour) is just as interesting, especially when it comes to the Saint-Jean Cathedral, Roman baths and ruined temple. You might want to try your hand at a new skill while you have the time too. If so, there’s an archery centre at Archery Dordogne (20 minutes) not too far from the site, once you’ve mastered the canoeing and kayaking in the village.
