  • Family-friendly glamping site opposite the beach in Châtelaillon-Plage
  • A 20-minute drive to La Rochelle and the bridge to Ile de Ré
  • Large waterpark on site, plus bike hire, massages and restaurant
What you pack in your suitcase for a stay at Kampaoh La Rochelle is up to you – but do not, under any circumstances, forget your swimming costume… The Châtelaillon-Plage location of this Charente-Maritime site gives you a clue about why that might be – as the pics will show you, the beach here is a long and sandy one, so it’s a lovely place to spend a day dipping in and out of the water. Best of all, it’s just over the road from the site, so you can wander over there whenever you wish. And that’s just one of the reasons why you’ll need your swimming stuff. The other is the excellent waterpark on site, where a 1,200m² tropical-style artificial lake is surrounded by sun loungers and palm trees, with a paddling pool and waterslides to keep the kids happy. You will, of course, need some time away from the water sooner or later, and there are plenty of facilities on hand for that too – including a spacious playground (with a pirate ship to climb on), sports courts and a games room. On a more chilled-out note, there are also massages available for the grown-ups. Swimming kit aside, you should be able to keep your packing list fairly short when you're coming here, as you’ll be staying in a well-equipped tent with beds, bed linen, furniture and a cool box provided. Bike hire and a launderette should help lighten the load even more – and there’s also a restaurant, bar and coffee shop to help keep everyone happily fed and watered.

Local attractions

Lounging on the beach is a fine option – but if you need more activity, you can also play games of miniature golf or sign up for various watersports including jetskiing and kitesurfing. There’s also the option of exploring the salt marshes a few kilometres south of the town – either on bikes, on foot or on horseback. There’s a lot of birdlife to see here, so binoculars are a good idea too if you're into wildlife watching. You will, of course, have noted that La Rochelle is close by too – you can get up to the seaside town in about 20 minutes by car or train. Once you're there, start with a stroll around the Vieux Port to see the medieval towers, perhaps poke around in the central market and then visit the cathedral, the Maritime Museum or Aquarium La Rochelle – one of the best aquariums anywhere in Europe. La Rochelle is also the gateway to the gorgeous Ile de Ré – a fabulous place for a bike ride between the beaches, salt marshes and villages.
