White fishing pond

  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven in Pas-de-Calais
  • A 35-minute drive from Arras, with hiking and cycling nearby
  • Fishing pond with carp, tench and roach; bar, bread shop and games
What are some of your getaway non-negotiables? A fishing pond? Easy access to bike rides and hikes? A dog-friendly place to stay? If you are, in fact, after all the above, fix your sights on Camping Les Sources in Pas-de-Calais. This place is a wildlife haven indeed: calm, wildlife-oriented and laid out with a fishing pond for lazy days by the water. The fishing pond measures 2000 square metres, with depths of between 1.2 metres and 3.5 metres, and young or old can tease out roach, tench and carp. That's not to say that this site is just about fishing – not in the slightest. There are games for the kids to get stuck into, including pétanque and table tennis. There’s plenty of scope for walking or cycling in the surrounding landscapes too – perhaps starting with the Le Sentier du Loup, 35 minutes’ walk away, which goes around the pretty little village of Sommeval and a series of wooded hillsides. If all of that has worked up a healthy appetite, then make a break for the site’s bread shop and bar. For a deeper foodie dive, the city of Arras is 35 minutes’ drive away and has a huge range of eateries (in addition to its quarry tunnels and Pas-de-Calais préfecture, which was once an 18th-century palace).

Liked: Leaving

Disliked: I'm surprised this campsite is even on Pitchup it's so awful. Unsanitary, lack of facilities, water tap seemingly next to where people empty their chemical loos, seedy undertone to the whole place. We booked for two night but left after one as couldn't last another minute.

Local attractions

What might you get up to in Arras (35 minutes’ drive)? This city opens up plenty of possibilities, from investigating a fine arts museum in the Abbey of St. Vaast to ogling over the Flemish architecture in the Place des Héros. Those who are craving the sand over the city won’t have too far to travel. A day trip to the coast is very much on the cards at the lively Berck (an hour and five minutes) or Le Touquet ( an hour and 10 minutes)… If you aren’t too worn out from the watersports on the waves, save some energy for cycles or clay pigeon shooting around the Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise (20 minutes) area. Frévent (15 minutes) has a swimming pool, museum and a monks’ pavilion and gallery in the Château de Cercamp. Those with kids might want to whisk them off to Paradis Konyka (15 minutes) too, a pony-themed living museum with over 30 breeds and guided tours with the friendly owners.
