  • Friendly peaceful site on the canalside 10 minutes from Watten
  • Snack bar on site with a sunny terrace overlooking the canal
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and ferry ports at Dunkirk or Calais
Dashing off to Dunkirk or Calais for your ferry? Don’t race off too fast, for there’s much to tempt those who choose to dawdle a while at Camping Les Dondaines. It’ll take you a measly half-hour to drive to either port from here, making it a smashing spot for a stopover pre- or post-Channel hop. Got a few more days to spare? If you’ve not done Dunkirk you should certainly see those sights, and there are also games of golf to play, sandy beaches to frolic on and loads of eats and drinks to sample at local restaurants and markets. There are lovely things to eat on site too, as long as you give the owners a bit of notice: meals from the snack bar can be packed up to take away or served up on the scenic canalside terrace, where you can watch boats putter past while you munch. Chilled-out evenings around the campfire or barbie may be on the cards too; pick up provisions 10 minutes away in Watten or at Saint-Omer’s markets (20 minutes) for your alfresco feasts. The vibe at this small site is a laidback and welcoming one, even for folks staying a single night; the owner’s received many ‘helpful’, ‘friendly’ and ‘lovely’ plaudits from past guests. He’s resisted the temptation to cram the site full of facilities, preferring instead to focus on the essentials (toilets, showers, washing-up area and wifi) and keeping the place peaceful.

Local attractions

Set forth for the seaside – it’s a 25-minute drive from the site to Grand-Fort-Philippe for strolls among the sand dunes, fishing from its harbour piers and nature walks in the Platier D’Oye Nature Reserve. If you’ve not been lucky with your wildlife sightings, you’re guaranteed to spot animals a few minutes further along at Fort-Mardyck zoo. Dunkirk (25 minutes’ drive) is a place that cemented its role in history during World War II, and that piece of the past is suitably commemorated at the Dunkirk 1940 Museum; the museum tells the eye-opening story of the evacuation of more than 300,000 soldiers through exhibits, models and film reels. If you need a bit of quiet contemplation after that, head over the road to the contemporary art museum or leave the town behind to paddle a boat through the peaceful Audomarois marshes 15 minutes away. You’re only 30 kilometres from the Belgian border here too, so you can zip over there in half an hour or so to feast on waffles and beer or take the kids to popular Plopsaland amusement park.
