  • Family-friendly site two kilometres from the centre of Saint-Girons
  • Donkey rides, paragliding, caving and canyoning all neary
  • Pool, themed meals and restaurant serving traditional Ariègeois dishes
Subterranean sorts and adventurous high fliers: this is the very site for you. Parc de Palétès is splendidly set in the Pyrenees, a mere couple of kilometres from the fab old town of Saint-Girons, which you can (and should) use as a startoff point for caving and climbing. It's a few minutes' drive too from another fab old town at Moulis, the local hub for paragliding trips: if you can summon up the nerve, a soar above these spectacular summits is very much recommended. Parc des Palétès is a family-friendly site in the Ariège department of the Midi-Pyrénées, close to the Spanish border and within the scenic surrounds of the Ariégeoise Pyrénées Regional Natural Park. As well as caving and paragliding, active types can trot along to donkey riding trips, canyoning sessions, or venture intrepidly into the mountains on one of the many hiking trails for all ages and abilities. There are also a couple of châteaux within easy reach, along with other attractions such as an archaeologyl theme park and the thermal baths of Aulus-les-Bains. And if your heart's desire is just to repose and relax on site? The restaurant terrace is a tiptop place to do so (it seats up to 170, so there should always be a spot). The menu specialises in traditional Ariègeois dishes from a grill menu, and you can also bag homemade pizzas to munch there or take away. Or have one sort for lunch and one sort for dinner, reclining on the terrace with a drink and book in between…? A pool and kids' pool are on site to keep you occupied among all that, along with a tennis court, games room and summer activities for kids such as treasure hunts and sports tournaments. Pool parties, themed meals and other events for all ages run a couple of times a week in high season. To bag a tasty breakfast or to pick up supplies for a picnic, the food shop sells bread and pastries baked on site.

Local attractions

Into the mountains… whether you're up for hiking, climbing, canyoning, caving or paragliding, it's all within easy reach of here. Start off at handsome Saint-Girons a couple of kilometres away for a potter around its old buildings, scenic streets and 16th-century bridge; then have a look at the Chemin de la Liberté in the old railway station, a museum commemorating the many people who fled through the Pyrenees from France to Spain in World War II (a freedom march is held in town every July too). A big market, one of the largest in the region, is on Saturday mornings, and a fair every second and fourth Monday of the month. Call in at the tourist office too to sort info on the region and to find out about canyoning, caving and climbing excursions leaving from the town. The Au Pays des Traces archaeology theme park four kilometres away is an excellent option for small adventurers, particularly if they're too teeny to hike around mountains or abseil up peaks. There's a plentiful pick of activities for kids, including the chance to be a tracker, detective, mountaineer and archaeologist (yep, the lot) for half a day or a day. If you (and very small sorts) don't mind the 20-kilometre drive, another top family day can be accessed at Betchat, where donkeys can take explorers into the mountains, for highly amusing hours among beaut Pyrenees surrounds. And if small sorts are up for sightseeing, the Château de Seix is about 20 minutes' drive away and the Château de Foix within 45. Finally, because by now you've jolly well earned it, the thermal baths at Aulus-les-Bains are a worthy 35-minute drive away.
