Camping Portes d'Ariège

- Leafy family campsite edging the Ariège River in the Midi-Pyrénées
- Pamiers five minutes’ drive and La Ferme aux Bisons 25 minutes
- Swimming pool, bar and restaurant; fishing and kayaking on the river
Does the campsite name give it away? Tucked away in leafy parkland, Camping Portes d’Ariège sits on the banks of the mighty Ariège River. At five minutes’ drive from the centre of historic Pamiers, this is a family-friendly spot from which to explore the Midi-Pyrénées and Occitanie or even sneak over the border to have a snoop around mountainous Andorra (roughly an hour’s drive).
Whether you’ll ever get as far as Andorra is debatable, as there’s much to keep you very happy on this well-maintained and lushly landscaped site. There’s a pool for splashing around in, a sun deck for topping up the tan, pool tables and a pétanque court for family games and direct access to the river for wild swimming, fishing and waterside hikes. Down by the river you can also launch canoes and kayaks from the campsite’s private boat ramp.
Barbecues are allowed at the pitches (try catching your supper in the river), but the campsite does have a licensed bar and restaurant if you’re not a fan of alfresco catering. The bistros and pizzerias of Pamiers are also only five minutes’ stroll away when you fancy a night out.

Local attractions
When you’re looking for inspo on family days out, try the tractor rides at La Ferme aux Bisons (25 minutes’ drive), where the kids can get (fairly) up close to herds of wild bison and fallow deer, and closer to geese and goats at the petting farm. Any budding botanists should hotfoot it to Le Parc aux Bambous (20 minutes) for strolls through sheets of bamboo on a sculpture walk, and if more robust activity is called for, the rope courses at La Belle Verte Accrobranche (15 minutes) should suffice nicely.
Continuing with the outdoor action, you can get adventurous on hang-gliding escapades (50 minutes), go rock climbing at Calames (half an hour) or cycle arduous trails in the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises (also half an hour).
Closer to home base, there are looped countryside bike rides from Pamiers (five minutes), where you can also meander along medieval canals, admire the stained glass in Saint-Antonin Cathedral and climb up the ornate, many-sided Tour de la Monnaie for views over the town to the Ariège River.
