  • Spacious site in the countryside with two lakes
  • Half an hour from Saarbrücken and an hour from Strasbourg and Metz
  • Two playgrounds, ping pong, pétanque; near 155-mile bike/hiking trail
Over 150 miles of a French countryside biking and hiking trail are easily accessible from friendly Parc Résidentiel de Loisirs St Vit in Lorraine's Moselle department – or might you prefer crossing the border to the land of Germany… Saarbrücken is an easy half-hour drive away. Parc Résidentiel de Loisirs St Vit is a spacious site for families and couples. With two lakes, it's surrounded by green countryside and has a swathe of green forest behind it. It's also about an hour from Strasbourg and Metz, and 150 metres from a bike path of over 150 miles. Guests can hire a bike from the tourist office in Sarreguemines (10 minutes' drive) to tackle the many local trails, or get active at the pétanque court, ping pong tables or two well-equipped playgrounds. Outdoor tables are around the site for pitchside picnics. For foodie supplies, a bakery is in the local village, a supermarket is within a mile and the shops and restaurants of the town of Sarreguemines are three miles. There's also a local pizzeria which works with the site to deliver a tasty meal to you.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Large site, plenty of space for most pitches, friendly owner. Good enough for a stopover. Shower units & toilet block were very clean & well looked after.

Disliked: Not many tent pitches available, 2-3 were taken up by one couple drying their clothes. 2 Euro hot shower cost. We were likely unlucky with the night we stayed but someone was going up and down a nearby road on a noisy motorbike for many hours.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Really very friendly staff on site who spoke excellent English compared to my pigeon French. Well maintained and clean toilet & shower facilities. We stayed at the campsite again on our return journey and even though the campsite is closed on a Sunday for check-in we called ahead and a member of staff came to open up the office so we could stay for the night. A very well stocked supermarket is close by, a bakery too but we didn’t make it there.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: It was quite quiet, with clean and decent bathrooms.

Disliked: We had to pay €2 for 10 minute showers. We received a key for bathrooms - not something we saw anywhere else. Slightly more planning required when more than one person in a group. My husband was using the toilet - the door closed and locked, and the lady from the reception was cleaning the loos. She unlocked his stall door and came in. She then seemed surprised and upset when he asked her to leave. No apology.

Respectueuses salutations . Christiane G.

Local attractions

Parc Résidentiel de Loisirs St Vit is in the Moselle department and a splendid base for tasting AOC Moselle wine or visiting towns such as Sarreguemines and Bitche (where you will happen across the famous 17th-century Citadel of Bitche). A cinema, a marina and a park are all close at-hand near Sarreguemines. The site's local commune of Neufgrange is about an hour's drive from the department capital Metz. At the former, sights to see include the spectacular sixteenth-century Saint-Étienne de Metz cathedral with the biggest expanse of stained glass windows in the world. A couple of other decent sights are around in Metz for record breakers: the oldest church in France in the Basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains (fourth century AD) and the country's oldest working opera house. Across the border, the Saarland Therme spa and wellness centre is at Kleinblittersdorf seven miles away and the city of Saarbrücken with its eighteenth-century castle is about another 15 minutes' drive north. Strasbourg is about an hour's drive away and has a historic opera house and a Gothic cathedral. The very popular Europa-Park theme park in Germany's Rust is under two hour's drive away too. Also have a look around Fort Casso, six miles from the German border between Bitche and Sarreguemines: it's one of the strongholds of the fortified World War II Maginot Line running from the North Sea to the beaches of the Mediterranean.
