Pitches in the forest

  • Small, peaceful and nature-filled site deep in a Lorraine pine forest
  • Maison de la Forêt 10 minutes' walk; close to fishing and hikes
  • Free-roaming animals on site; play area and games kit to borrow
Time to escape from the noise of urban life? You'll be able to do exactly that at À l'Orée de Soi, a small and remote Lorraine site deep in the forest about 10 minutes' drive from Cirey-sur-Vezouze. It’s all about embracing the quieter, slower pace of natural life at this isolated site, where you can pick any pitch you fancy – perhaps a nice sunny spot or a pitch in the cool shade of the pine trees. Families are very welcome here, with a play area for the kids and plenty of fun things to borrow (for free): skittles, pétanque kit, board games, balls and racquets… As well as all that, you’ll be able to befriend the free-roaming rabbits and chickens that live here, listen out for birds and owls as you wander around the site, gather for campfire evenings or maybe bring a guitar for an evening singalong – all the best of life's simple pleasures. Venturing a little beyond the site, there are plenty of bike trails, hiking routes and fishing spots close by, plus other outdoor activities including horse riding, watersports and wild swimming. An easy 10-minute walk away is the Maison de la Forêt, which hosts activities and exhibitions and also has a treetop play area and an electric bike rental service. For other days out, you’ll have heaps of choice nearby, including a good list of châteaux from across the ages. As a small and nature-focused site, facilities here have been kept fairly simple, but you'll have access to a shared fridge and freezer, picnic tables, wifi, showers and compost toilets.

Local attractions

For outdoor activities, Pexonne (15 minutes’ drive) has a horse riding centre and there are watersports and fishing spots at Lac de Pierre-Percée (half an hour). For a more laidback way to take in the scenery, take a trip on the Train Forestier d'Abreschviller en Moselle (half an hour). A dip into local history might start with a tour of the various châteaux nearby: medieval Château de Blâmont (20 minutes) and Château de Lutzelbourg (45 minutes) both lie in ruins, while Château de Lunéville (40 minutes) still sits grandly in its 21 hectares of formal gardens. You may also like to stop by at Croix Guillaume archaeological site (half an hour) to see the vestiges of an ancient village. There are plenty of arty attractions around as well – with more than 600 exhibits, Collection Baccarat (half an hour) is a must for fans of crystal and other decorative objects. There are colourful stained-glass windows in place at Abbé Grégoire Museum (half an hour) and a huge 12-metre one designed by Marc Chagall at Chapel of the Cordeliers in Sarrebourg (35 minutes).
