  • Shaded dog-friendly site with an 11-hectare pond for no-kill fishing
  • A 15-minute drive to Tours de Merle and the Dordogne Valley
  • Equestrian centre, café and restaurant and boat or tube rental on site
Day by the lake – or two, or three or four? At Aire Naturelle de Camping Moulin de Malesse, come to get your peaceful outdoors fix in a forest setting facing an 11-hectare pond. The days are very calm here, so bring your fishing rods, hooks, sunscreen and beach towel for the lake and perhaps a wicker basket to pick mushrooms and chestnuts. A trusty pair of hiking boots will always come in handy too, as this green setting near Sylvain Lascaze is a short drive away from Dordogne Valley trails (and there are plenty of trails across the whole of Xaintrie). Families and pets are warmly welcomed on the site, as are keen horse-riders. There’s an equestrian centre with hikes and courses for all levels, available to book at an hourly rate. The owners’ horses trot unhindered around the site, probably enjoying the green backdrop just as much as the guests. Anglers who heard the word ‘lake’ and began to rejoice will be pleased to hear that the pond is stocked with no-kill carp weighing up to 30kg, along with tench, pike, roach and perch. Boat and tube rental is also available. Pick up snacks, ice cream or something from the grill from the on-site café and restaurant or set up your own barbecue. There are restaurants and shops in Saint-Privat, 35 minutes’ walk away from the site.

Local attractions

You may decide that there’s little that can beat the views of the fairytale-esque Tours de Merle (15 minutes’ drive), a ruined 12th-century citadel balanced on a craggy hill between oak forests. All the same, you might find yourself soon mistaken when you enter the Dordogne Valley (from 15 minutes), with its hilltop villages, caves, castles and riverfront towns. Argentat-sur-Dordogne (20 minutes) may be your moment of realisation, as it has riverfront cafés and bistros and a small fleet of restored ancient boats which whisk passengers on trips down the Dordogne. It's rather pretty at Les Jardins Sothys (15 minutes) too, wandering around the botanical and vegetable gardens or tucking into lunch at the lakeside barn restaurant. Still, it’s only with a 10-minute drive that guests can get a taste of life in the Middle Ages. Farms of the Middle Ages Xaintrie (10 minutes) has farms, a mill, church and gardens with 400 plants used for medicine and other needs in the medieval times.
