France may no longer be ruled by royals, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the royal treatment… At least, not if you spend some lavish days at Juliette Tentvakanties at Domaine de Mialaret, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the Limousin town of Neuvic. In the grounds of a stunning 19th-century château near the Gorges de la Dordogne, the site oozes class: just take a peep at the pics to feel like royalty in waiting… There’s plenty to keep princesses and princelings occupied – like a kids’ club, raft building, a circus school, rope courses and laser tag for a start, plus lots of animals to meet – while the king and queen settle in for sunny snoozes by the pool or take to the fishing lakes for a lazy afternoon waiting for something to bite. When the party is ready to head out on some noble adventures, hiking and mountain biking trails can be followed directly from the site, and the site team can help to arrange kayaking on the Dordogne, 4x4 tours, sailing courses or golf practice. Then back to base to satisfy stately appetites... the site has an elegant castle restaurant guests will want to reign over, and down-to-earth offerings at the brasserie and takeaway. Sort breakfast with bread and pastries ordered in the small on-site shop, then settle in for evenings of music, movies and discos before crownless heads hit pillows.

Local attractions

For even more royal-appropriate activities, a trip into Neuvic (10 minutes’ drive away) is a must: there are horses to ride, botanical gardens to glide around, two golf courses for classy rounds and a castle to inhabit. After all that, return to the real world with watersports on Triouzoune lake. Active types excited by the watersports can keep heart rates up with a visit to the village of Liginiac 15 minutes away, to get stuck into activities including swimming, climbing and canoeing. The village also has some castle ruins to clamber around, which might inspire history buffs to head just a little further to Château de Ventadour, an 11th-century castle ruin home to falconry displays, medieval food fairs and treasure hunts. While amateur historians may find themselves immersed in the past at the Centre de Découverte du Moyen Age, engineering nerds may be drawn to two impressive structures nearby: the Marèges dam and the Rochers Noirs viaduct, both within 25 minutes. If industrial architecture doesn’t appeal, opt instead for a jaunt to Meymac, 35 minutes away. The pretty village on the Luzège has lots of narrow streets to wander and traditional stone buildings to stroll among, as well as having some lovely views over the countryside.
