Its nickname ‘the Garden of Lozère’ should give you a a bit of a hint as to why the village of Ispagnac is such a lovely place to stay. This pretty little place in the Languedoc-Roussillon region is a designated ‘Green Resort’, and known for its attractive tree-lined streets and the orchards that stretch up sunny hillsides and produce bucketloads of tasty fruit each summer.
Just on the edge of the village (about five minutes’ walk from its shops, cafés and restaurants) is Camping Les Cerisiers, a peaceful site that makes a fabulous base for a break spent exploring the stunning natural surroundings. That might be a short stroll to the banks of the River Tarn or some time spent hiking, biking, canoeing and climbing some of the top spots in the surrounding Cévennes National Park. Animal parks, showcaves and a vintage steam train are also close by, so there’s plenty of variety for the visitor.
Back at base after a busy day, your first stop may well be the heated outdoor pool – for a dip followed by a snooze on one of the sun loungers. There’s also a play area for the youngsters, and everyone can join in with games of pétanque, billiards and table football. Wifi, a TV room and a library are on hand for a bit of quieter time.
A shared barbecue area awaits for when you fancy a bit of outdoor cooking, along with a bar with shaded terrace for cool drinks. Don’t fancy cooking? Head over the road to the site’s sister business, a hotel with a cosy restaurant serving regional specialities.

Local attractions
A stroll along Ispagnac’s heritage trail is a nice way to stretch your legs, with some great views of the area’s limestone cliffs along the way as well. For a longer outing, a good place to start is the GR736 trail, which crosses the Gorges du Tarn area and is suitable for hiking or cycling. Alternatively, hire canoes to paddle along the Tarn (20 minutes’ drive), try out the via ferrata climbing trail in Rousses (40 minutes) or experience the adrenaline hit of canyoning in the Gorges du Tapoul (45 minutes).
All sound a bit tiring? Plot a course instead to La Malène (40 minutes), where boatmen paddle traditional vessels through the soaring canyons, or ride the Steam train of Cevennes (an hour and 10 minutes) to see the scenery in style.
Don’t neglect the underground scenery, either – riding the funicular down into Aven Armand (45 minutes) is a wonderful way to experience the limestone cave. If animal life is more your thing, spend some time at Les Loups du Gévaudan (50 minutes).
