  • Leafy family-friendly campsite on the River Tarn at Ispagnac in Lozère
  • Florac 15 minutes’ drive and Cévennes National Park 20 minutes
  • Swimming pool, playground, pétanque, ping-pong and a pizzeria on site
Tucked away in the pretty, fortified village of Ispagnac in Lozère, Camping du Pré Morjal sits amid lush greenery on the side of the River Tarn as it runs its course through the spectacular Gorges du Tarn. Stretching over three hectares of pretty countryside with views to Pyrénées peaks in the distance, this small and relaxed family-friendly campsite is run on ecological lines and powered by renewable energy. Once settled in at your pitch, you might decide to simply laze in the sun by the heated pool (open the end of June to the end of August)… But there are other activities available too, from pétanque to pool and ping-pong, plus a play area for your toddlers, and many more within just a few minutes’ walk. You can try wild swimming in the river, trout fishing and playing tennis at the local courts, or go cycling, kayaking and paragliding… so there’s no doubt you’ll find your new favourite sport somewhere on that list. As far as food goes, barbecues are available for communal use on site, there’s a pizzeria for family meals (in high season only) and occasional informal get-togethers over supper (please book these in advance). Anything else you need can be found in Ispagnac, including a convenience store and produce markets every Tuesday and Saturday morning on the village square.

Local attractions

Nature lovers can soon be out in the Cévennes National Park (20 minutes’ drive) for hiking on rugged limestone cliffs, kayaking down the River Tarn and dips in the pool below the spectacular Cascades d’Orgon (about an hour). While you’re wandering in the park, keep an eye out for local fauna including deer, mouflon sheep, beavers and vultures. If you’d like to delve into the cultural heritage of the area, start your explorations in Florac (15 minutes), hidden away in the Tarnon river valley and known for its fine château and lots of terrace restaurants in cobbled piazzas. Another gorgeous spot is Sainte-Enimie (25 minutes), a medieval village spread over two sides of the Tarn; if you need a swimming spot for cooling off on a sunny day, there’s a little pebble beach next to the bridge across the river. The kids might enjoy the novelty of going underground by funicular at Aven Armand cave complex (45 minutes), where you can admire prettily illuminated stalactites and stalagmites; another option is the Grotte de Dargilan (about an hour), where trails lead through meandering tunnels to subterranean rivers and lakes.
