  • Quiet and shaded family site on the Canal du Midi
  • Surrounded by the vineyards of Languedoc and 6km from beaches
  • Big outdoor pool surrounded by palm trees and sun loungers
Take your pick from canal trips, vineyard trips and Mediterranean beaches on a holiday at Hérault's Les Berges du Canal, right on the banks of the Canal du Midi in southern France. Hire a bike from Nadine, Marc and their friendly team to pedal alongside this peaceful canal, or wander its many locks on foot. You could also bike to local town Villeneuve-les-Beziers, to historic Beziers six kilometres away, or to the markets of Serignan and Portiragnes, both four kilometres from the site. Les Berges du Canal is a peaceful and shaded family-friendly park, surrounded by the vineyards of Languedoc and close to the beaches of the Mediterranean. It has a big outdoor pool surrounded by greenery, palm trees and sun loungers, plus a play area and a TV room along with a kids' club that's open in high season. Dogs are allowed. The bar and restaurant has a terrace overlooking the canal; there's a shop on site, and a supermarket is a short drive away.

2 bedroom mobile home (six person)

Liked: Location was ok for us.

Disliked: We were extremely disappointed with the accommodation we were given at Berges Du Canal campsite last week. It was not as advertised. I specifically chose the accommodation because it looked modern, bright and airy. Our accommodation was extremely dated (probably the oldest on the site), and situated in the 'owners' part of the site. It had electrical wire connectors open to the elements on the light fitting in the living room and also in 2 places below the boiler in the toilet; it had rubbish left under the hob; old bottles of mayonaise left in the cupboard, old cigarette lighters, wires hanging out from cupboards and walls, an extra fridge freezer just left unplugged in the living room, electrical items plugged unsafely into multiple extension leads, multiple extension leads on display, including dangling over the hob, very poor quality and stained bedding, multiple household items left behind a curtain on the balcony and the balcony had not been cleaned in a very long time (evident by accumulated dust). We had no bed linen on our first night. After seeing our accomodation after arrival, we went back to the receptionist to ask to be moved, or at the very least get some bed linen, but reception was closed, so we spent our first night without any bed lined. We asked the receptionist, the next morning, why our accommodation beared no resemblance to the photos on websites, she made no attempt to offer us an alternative, saying that you had multiple types of accommodation, but only one photo. This is highly unacceptable, and is mis-representation. On our walk around the campsite it was clear that more modern, suitable accommodation was vacant during the period of our stay, and could have been offered to us. Had we known the accommodation would be like this we would not have booked at this site. Additionally, the websites advertise the swimming pool as being available for use during the dates of our stay. Whilst one smaller, childrens pool was open, the main adult pool was dirty, and fenced off, not for use. Again, not as advertised.

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Location beside canal and ability to walk to a restaurant and bar.

Disliked: For us the site was very tightly packed with little screening so that we were overlooked in every direction. This made it feel too public with no privacy beside our vehicle.

Local attractions

The ancient town of Beziers, once a Roman colony, is a scenic six-kilometre bike ride from the site, filled with buildings to see from throughout the centuries. Pick up a leaflet at the tourist office for details of the several walks around the town. Beziers has four museums: Le Musée des Beaux Arts at the Hotel Fabregat, with works by Decamps, Degas and Rodin; Le Musée des Beaux Arts at the Hotel Fayet, showcasing a collection of sculptures by local artist Jean-Antoine Injalbert and with a courtyard broadcasting concerts and theatre productions; Le Musée du Biterrois, with artefacts from prehistoric times onwards, and Le Musée d’Histoire Naturelle, home to collections of natural history. From Beziers, you can head north to small towns like Roquebrun; south and east to seaside resorts including Cap d'Agde, and west to the old centre of Narbonne, with 13th-century cathedral and remains of the Roman road Via Domitia. The nearest beaches, including the award-winning sands of Valras and Portiragnes, are within six kilometres.
