Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Excellent outdoor pool and indoor heated pool. Lots of sun beds available, although I have been told it gets very busy at weekends with families, so mid week is best.

Disliked: Pitches were very rough, a few patches of grass but mainly mud. Lots and lots of ants and mosquitos. A good walk into town, beware of cyclists and scooters they are everywhere.

Local attractions

The Camargue area is perhaps best known as a place of watery landscapes, and you should be able to find plenty of those around here. Le Grau-du-Roi has various boat trips and watersports on offer (including windsurfing, kayaking and scuba diving) and a town beach, and there are a couple more excellent beaches close by at Plage du Boucanet and Plage de l’Espiguette (both about 10 minutes’ drive). To see marine life without getting your hair wet, take a trip to Seaquarium (20 minutes’ walk away) – or, to see if you can spot some of the land-based animals roaming among the surrounding wetland scenery, you may like to go out on a horseback adventure or a 4x4 safari (both can be organised in Le Grau-du-Roi). For a change of scenery, try a day of exploring the elegant streets of Montpellier (40 minutes’ drive), visiting the former home of Vincent Van Gogh in Arles (50 minutes) or checking out the Roman ruins in Nîmes (55 minutes).
