  • Family-friendly site on the Seine, one hour by train from Paris
  • Médan 15 minutes’ walk; Palace of Versailles 35 minutes’ drive
  • Riverside restaurant; playground and pétanque court; dogs welcome
Imagine making your friends green with envy when you tell them that for your next camping holiday you’ll be staying on the left bank of the Seine – literally just across a quiet street from the water. It might not be Paris’ Left Bank, but Paris Camping Île du Roi does sit right on the Seine, on the outskirts of Triel-sur-Seine (10 minutes’ drive), to the north west of the French capital (about one hour away by public transport). Instead of Parisian road traffic and wandering groups of tourists, however, here you get peaceful surroundings, a rural landscape and the occasional dog walker. You and your canine companion (a welcome guest) can join them for a stroll along the river bank, maybe all the way to the Yacht Club de Triel (35 minutes on foot) and past the allotments of the Rive Gauche Garden. On the other hand, you might prefer to soak up the serenity of the site, leaving the kids to explore the play area while you perfect your throwing on the pétanque court or sip a chilled glass of rosé on the covered terrace of the riverfront La Guinguette restaurant. In the evening, La Guinguette becomes the stage for entertainment, including live music and themed soirées. If you’re into watersports, Val de Seine Leisure Island (10 minutes’ drive) has kayak and paddleboard rentals, plus pedal boats and areas devoted to wild swimming and fishing.

Liked: Location Friendly couple who ran the site ( but never saw them again after we checked in) One sanitaire block was modern and clean The site felt very secure Site was clean and pitches well set out and clearly numbered. Restaurant was decent. Fob for entering the site was good. Good bin area

Disliked: Staff were never visible. Office was always closed. Site felt more like a residential site for men working in the area, than a campsite. Showers (to preserve water) rarely worked. So would have to dress and go into another and try that one. It was very frustrating. On arrival, we had to phone a French number to get staff to come to gate to open even though it was within the check in times. Didn’t get an introduction to the area or given leaflets of where to go/what to do. Definitely felt deserted. Washing machine needed 50cent coins which we didn’t have but no one around to ask for help. It was also frustrating that we paid for electric hook up even though we didn’t need it because we were told that’s all they had. When in fact clearly it wasn’t when we arrived as there were lots of empty pitches. Wi-Fi was terrible. Never worked again after the first day. Left a night early as had had enough. If you don’t like trains then you’ll be bothered by them. We don’t mind them. Unlit walk by river to train station ( 2.2km walk) which gets muddy. It’s narrow in places and uneven. One bit feels creepy next to deserted buildings, over growing trees and bushes. A little intimidating and I wouldn’t do alone. But the next village Medan, and Villenue sur Seine are nice.

Liked: Good facilities (although wristband for shower seems ott) and beautiful riverside setting.

Disliked: Noisy. Under Charles de Gaulle flightpath, very close to TGV line, and A16 motorway bridge close by so sleep disturbed. Cafe/bar closed Mon/Tues - the days of our stay. Old static homes make the place look rundown although it isn't. No shop. No ice or freezer capabilities. A few simple improvements would make a huge difference.

Liked: New showers were ok but working with the wristbands was a bit hit and miss Staff were helpful Restaurant was very nice

Disliked: Old toilet block smelled really bad The area of the site we were on smelled awful from the septic tank Should have researched the site before we booked as the distance to the train station was quite far to get into central Paris

Liked: The site is located down a long lane, next to the Seine. The bar and toilet blocks had just been refurbished and were obviously of excellent quality. The grey water waste was unavailable (just for the few days of our stay as a brand new concrete standing was being laid - although a slight disadvantage for us I see this as positive as another improvement of the site). The pitches were spacious. We got Ubers to Poissy which gave us great access to Paris.

Disliked: The wifi was a bit hit and miss. Im not sure if this is part of the on going development.

Local attractions

Just over a kilometre south of the site, and therefore eminently walkable (15 minutes along the river), Médan is home to La Maison d’Émile Zola, where the French writer lived from the late 1870s, welcoming artist friends such as Édouard Manet. The 15th-century Château de Medan can be visited by appointment, and the hospitable owners throw in tea or apéro in the cellar. Built by Louis XIV, the scintillating Palace of Versailles (35 minutes’ drive) includes such highlights as the Hall of Mirrors, hung with chandeliers and lined with gilded statues, and the King’s Apartment, with a four-poster bed draped with heavy gold and red damask. The vast formal gardens are dotted with statuary and fountains. If you spend only one day in Paris, make the most of your time by sticking to its western side. The Fondation Louis Vuitton, in the Bois de Boulogne, houses world-class collections of contemporary art. At the other end of the park, Stade Roland Garros is a must-visit for tennis enthusiasts. Then cross the Seine and make your way to the Eiffel Tower.
