  • Family-friendly campsite on the River Loing in the Île-de-France
  • 25 minutes’ drive to Fontainebleau; direct access to the Scandibérique
  • Sports, shop and food trucks
Rather like the sound of a family-friendly Fontainebleau holiday with bags to do straight from your pitch? Perhaps it’s time to book Camping La Rivière Dorée, an Île-de-France campsite at Bagneaux-sur-Loing, with its volleyball court, table tennis, pétanque court and playground for younger kids. That should keep everyone happy, at least for a while. Laid out on a four-hectare woodland estate, La Rivière Dorée overlooks the Seine-et-Marne’s River Loing, should you prefer canoeing or paddleboarding (book both and hire gear nearby). Also available right next door: cycle hire and tennis courts. So you see, there’s no excuse to ever be bored. Everything else is pretty much taken care of too. Bread and pastries are available every morning, or you can pre-book (by 8pm the night before) a whole family breakfast to pick up from reception. A waffle stand and food truck selling burgers and pizzas take care of day-time snacking, while you can pick up any forgotten essentials at the on-site shop. A washing machine requiring an extra fee can keep everyone looking pristine, and if you’ve left any vital baby gear at home, you’re sure to find it for rent at the site. Arrived at La Rivière Dorée feeling frazzled? No problem, you can iron out any stress wrinkles with massages and treatments at the wellness centre; these are based on availability and must be booked in advance when you are on the site.

Van Beethoven gypsy wagon

Liked: We were only booked in for one night en route to a longer holiday further south, but when we arrived late, hungry and tired after a long journey, Amelie (the owner) treated us like royalty. We asked if there was somewhere nearby we could eat, and she immediately offered to cook us a pizza and serve us a pint of cold beer. She was a real star, and the pizzas and beer were delicious! We slept like logs in the comfy Van Beethoven gypsy caravan, and woke to birdsong and a really good breakfast (ordered from Amelie the night before). The campsite facilities were spotless, with plentiful hot water and very nice outside seating, and we couldn't have wished for a more pleasant or hospitable overnight stay. Thank you, Amelie and the team!

Disliked: That we couldn't stay longer!

Natura primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite, reception super friendly, pitch sizes are huge and most are surrounded by some trees which gives a bit of privacy. Toilet blocks/ showers are good. Nice location between the canal and river-wish we were there longer so we could canoe both. Food truck looked good (we'd already brought food with us so couldn't try it out) and there was a good selection of drinks avaliable at reception. Site very peaceful and very cheap :)

Disliked: Nothing really, just wish we had time to stay longer but we were on our way back home :(

Powered grass travel trailer campsite (comfort, plus)

Liked: Very relaxing friendly campsite. Good sanitation facilities. Good pitch sizes. Easy to get to the station for train into Paris. Great swimming lake a short cycle away along the river. Fontainebleau was a lovely day out .

Disliked: Unfortunately lots of mosquitos, we couldn't sit outside although maybe it was just our pitches as everyone else was outside!

Local attractions

So you know there’s masses to do messing about on the River Loing, but what else is available around La Rivière Dorée? Well, for a start, Fontainebleau Forest (20 minutes’ drive) is climbing-central. Try the kids on bouldering at Rocher Canon (40 minutes’ drive), and progress on to the slightly harder way-marked trails at Apremont (35 minutes) Hiking families, grab your walking boots and set out into Fontainebleau Forest with a picnic. See how the kids cope with an hour’s looped walk through the Gorges de Franchard (45 minutes), or for more testing routes, try out the Circuit des 25 Bosses in the Massif des Trois Pignons (40 minutes). Back at home base, keen cyclists have direct access to the Scandibérique cycle path, which runs alongside the campsite on its epic 1,700-kilometre journey from Trondheim in Norway to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. For a dig into local culture, visit the ornate apartments restored by Napoleon at the stately Château de Fontainebleau (25 minutes), where you can also wander romantic formal gardens, or tour the Gothic-style chapels and the modern-art museum at romantic riverside Château de Nemours (10 minutes).
