Who's up for a stroll? Take your pick from several scenic spots to amble to at Camping Les Promenades... it's right on the left bank of the Loue river for waterside wanders, and is a few hundred metres from the handsome Doubs and Franche-Comté town of Quingey for town and sightseeing hours, shopping and restaurants. This is a good-sized site for roaming around too... just do make time to sit and take in the scenery, of the green countryside to the north and Quingey's 16th-century bridge to the south. But you'll be driven to have day trips around here as well. For Camping Les Promenades is within easy reach of two splendid UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, 20 minutes' drive away, and the spectacular Citadel of Besançon within 25. It's also only 15 to 20 minutes from the caves – and beach – at Osselle, and 20 from the spa town and two forts of Salins-les-Bains. Camping Les Promenades is a peaceful and relaxed site, nicely cool in the summer because of its river setting. There's pétanque and tennis for leisurely hours on site, a play area to keep the kids entertained, and bike hire for more exploring the region sans car. Amenities include showers and toilets, disabled facilities, free wifi and a launderette.

Local attractions

Doubs architecture is rightly famed throughout France: as well as the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and the Citadel of Besançon, trek along to the town of Ornans (45 minutes), with its old houses rising on stilts from the Loue river, or to Château de Joux, a clifftop fortress in the Jura mountains just over an hour's drive away. Take some time too to plunge into the vast Chaux Forest, near the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and the second biggest forest in France (the saltworks were built near the forest to supply wood for the salt production process). The forest covers over 20,000 hectares of wood and wildlife haven home to critters including boar, deer, foxes and weasels; take one of the marked trails to see what you can spot. Also on the forest edge is Osselle, home to an eight-kilometre network of caves visited since the early 16th century (wise man Voltaire is said to have been at one of the regular underground feasts here). The caves are open to the public for most of the year. The lake, beach and leisure centre of Osselle-Routelle is three kilometres north from the caves.
