  • Small and secluded site high up in the Corsican hills
  • On the edge of Santa-Lucia-di-Mercurio, 20 minutes' drive from Corte
  • Located on the Mare a Mare Nord trail; 50 metres from a crêperie
Keen to explore the isle of Corsica in all its mountainous magnitude? Then make for Camping L'Agrottu in Santa-Lucia-di-Mercurio, a pocket-sized site where friendly owners Joseph-Antoine and Johanna will help settle you down at a spot with a hillside view. The site is located mere metres from the Mare a Mare Nord trail, a coast-to-coast hiking path that takes in mountain villages, pretty peaks and spectacular sea vistas. The folk at Camping L'Agrottu also run a crêperie a few metres down the road, so if you fancy kicking off your day with a full stomach and a smile on your face order a locally-sourced Corsican breakfast the evening before donning your walking gear. If that all sounds a bit intense, scrap the hiking part and drive 20 minutes into Corte, where you can pootle around the hill town's pavement cafés. Back on site, there are solar showers to help you cool off, as well as handy features like a standpipe, barbecue zone and free wifi. Curious about the Boziu region? Camping L'Agrottu is on the same estate as an eco museum that’s packed with multilingual info about the local area and its traditions. If you're after fine food with sweeping scenic vistas, head into the centre of Santa-Lucia-di-Mercurio, where there's a top-rated charcuterie joint and speciality produce shop.

Local attractions

Corte (20 minutes' drive) is well worth visiting for its historic heritage alone – the town was once the capital of Pascal Paoli's short-lived Corsican republic and home to a certain Maria Letizia Buonaparte, mother of the future French emperor. Interesting enough, you might think, but doubly so given the splendid views on offer from the town's belvedere viewpoint. Corsica has its fair share of brill beaches, and Santa-Lucia-di-Mercurio is about 50 kilometres from the closest bit of coast. Jaunts to the sea are well worth the drive, whether you opt to just lounge and chill on Plage de l'Ostriconi beach (an hour) or get active at Losari watersports centre (an hour). There's much to be said for the island's inland waters as well – the hike up to see the crystal-clear Lac de Capitellu and Lac de Melo (50 minutes) isn't the easiest of strolls, but these peaceful natural surrounds make a promising spot for a much-deserved picnic. After working out your legs, put your upper body to use and scale the rocks at Via Ferrata Corse (40 minutes), a climbing trail in the Asco valley.
