It's free, quick and easy!
- Active family-friendly site on the edge of a forest in the Ardennes
- A 15-minute drive from Ardwen brewery and 30 minutes from Belgium
- Indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant, bike hire and tree-top courses
On the edge of a forest, and just five minutes’ drive from the Ardennes Regional Natural Park, Domaine de la Vénerie – a kilometre and a half from the village of Signy-l’Abbaye – is a must-visit site for active families, and for those who just want to unwind too.
If stays doing as much as possible appeal, the site has plenty to keep all members of the family busy: as well as the on-site playground for smaller kids (with bouncy castle and trampolines), a go-karting circuit should fuel all speed freaks’ stays. A treetop adventure park is also part of the site, so those with a head for heady heights can wander there for days of sky-high explores.
Given proximity to forest and regional natural park, it should come as no surprise that a wealth of trails and routes are within easy reach of home base. These can be followed on foot, of course, but electric bike rental is also available on site.
Those interested in a more leisurely stay may prefer to opt for days spent lazing by the outdoor pool during high season or, when inclement weather strikes, floating away their problems in the heated indoor pool. The on-site restaurant is a top spot when movement is confined to food runs, and its outdoor terrace overlooks the playground – a prime location when parents aren’t as energy-filled as kids.

Local attractions
In the northern reaches of the Champagne-Ardenne, stays here would surely be missing a trick if they didn’t include some bubbly explores. These can be had with ease in the city of Reims (50 minutes’ drive away) famed for its champagne cellars, including Veuve Clicquot's and some dating to Roman times.
Of course, champagne isn’t the only reason to visit Reims. The city has plenty of museums and Roman remains to wander, some gorgeous architecture, and a planetarium for gazing to the skies. Charleville-Mézières (40 minutes) continues the theme of oh-so-pretty buildings, with a spectacular Place Ducale and a famous puppeteer clock.
This may be part of France’s champagne region, but that’s far from the only beverage available hereabouts… It’s just 15 minutes from the site to Brasserie Ardwen, a craft brewery where tours, tastings and meals are all to be had.
Those who’d prefer a taste of history instead may want to point steps towards Musée Guerre et Paix, 15 minutes away, which is dedicated to World Wars I and II. More about World War II can be explored at the site of one of Hitler’s bunkers in Brûly-de-Pesche (40 minutes), across the border in Belgium. Belgian explores start within 30 minutes of the site.
