Professing itself (quite literally) as a ‘beautiful madness’, La Belle Folie sits on the outskirts of the village of Ploemel (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), in the Morbihan department. The location (an enchanting spot in the middle of a forest) certainly goes a long way towards explaining the ‘belle’ part of its name.
But what about the ‘folie’? Well, that refers to its unusual collection of pitch types, which were designed by the students of the architecture school in Nantes. You can rest easy, though: despite their quirkiness, the contemporary accommodations come with real beds and all (or at least, most) you might need for a comfortable stay.
The site runs a lively programme of activities for its guests: from live music concerts to children’s shows, and from yoga classes to exhibitions and workshops, the latter with a special eye on eco-friendly agricultural practices and permaculture techniques. Many of these events take place inside the greenhouse, where you can also grab a table at mealtimes – the restaurant serves seasonal dishes with high-quality ingredients sourced from trusted local producers, as well as mouthwatering picnic baskets (including a bottle of wine).
There’s a communal library if you fancy whiling away a few hours with a good book… though you might prefer to have a soak in the hot tub, or exploring the local area. The spectacular coast of Brittany, with its sandy beaches and sheltered coves, is about 15 minutes’ drive away, or you can hike along the Rivière d’Étel (20 minutes), past oyster sellers and pretty marinas.

Local attractions
Both children and adults can make like tree-dwelling creatures at Forêt Adrénaline Carnac - Parc accrobranche (10 minutes’ drive), which has colour-coded treetop courses for all ages, abilities and levels of bravery, plus ziplines, trampolines and ball pits.
The Alignements of Carnac (10 minutes) is a 3000-strong collection of prehistoric menhirs (standing stones), some dating as far back as the fourth millennium BC. If you feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of the site, you can grab a seat on the miniature train that rides through it.
Lorient (half an hour) played a key role during World War II. Today you can still visit the German-built submarine base and see if you manage to control your claustrophobia while inside the Flore S-645 (a French submarine from the 1960s). Also on the harbour is the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly, with sailing yachts and boat tours.

Keravan treehouse (mezzanine)
Liked the caravan treehouse, fabulous to wake up in the caravan and look out into the forest. 5 mins from main Carnac site. The fantastic restaurant - under a perspex dome amongst the tropical plants and the food was delicious. We loved it!
