  • Quiet family-friendly site with lots of greenery and wildflowers
  • A 35-minute drive from Vézelay and the trail to Santiago de Compostela
  • Football and volleyball, books, chess and playgrounds on site
A nature-filled break, with the chance to try some of Burgundy’s famed cuisine and wines? That’s a pretty tempting proposition, and one that Camping Ushaïa Villages Au Bois Joli very much fulfils, as this very green site has lots of wildflowers and birds and an on-site restaurant. You should have plenty of opportunities to get to know the region’s history too, as the site is within easy driving distance of several historically important spots. Vézelay, 35 minutes’ drive away, is situated on the pilgrims' trail to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The historic towns of Avallon and Auxerre are a 40- to 45-minute drive away too. The site can be used as a launchpad for cycling along Canal du Nivernais, a 111-mile canalside route, or for other outdoor activities such as canoeing, rafting, mountain biking, fishing and walking too. If you had in mind a lazier getaway, unwind on the spacious, shaded pitches, perhaps with your pet dog sitting obediently at your feet. In May and June, there are around 15 species of wild orchids on site, adding to the wild feel. A large solar-heated outdoor swimming pool and a small paddling pool are open from June until mid-September. There are also sports facilities for football and volleyball, a small library of books for guests to read, a chess set and kids’ playgrounds. Kids' activities are organised by the site during the high season. That's not all, either, as the site has a bicycle rental service, a grocery store and a bread and pastries service. There are further shops and restaurants in Coulanges-sur-Yonne and Surgy, which are both five minutes’ drive away from Camping Ushaïa Villages Au Bois Joli.

Local attractions

Fancy yourself as quite the historian? Get into character by visiting Guédelon (35 minutes’ drive), a modern attempt at recreating the style and atmosphere of a medieval castle. For real castles built within their own time, the 17th-century Castle of Saint-Fargeau (40 minutes) and 12th-century Château de Bazoches (45 minutes) are some stunning options. The region has a fair few historical towns too, from Avallon (45 minutes) with its ramparts and eighth-century old quarter to Autun’s Roman remains (an hour and 50 minutes). Auxerre (40 minutes) is Burgundy’s fourth-largest city and is jam-packed with historical sites such as an abbey. Here, a fine way to spend the day is to stop off at the wine villages along the Canal du Nivernais. With some wine tasting under your belt, make your way to the Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure (35 minutes) if you’re at all interested in the underground world. Not only do these caves have stalactites, stalagmites and cave pearls, but they also have Palaeolithic paintings, tools and bones.
