  • Family-friendly site with petting zoo in the Saône-et-Loire department
  • 45 minutes from Jura’s mountains, vineyards, waterfalls and lakes
  • Outdoor pool, restaurant, food shop and playground all on site
Fresh bread when you wake up and mornings spent mingling with the resident farm animals… sound like your kind of break? If so, head to Camping Les Arbois, a family-friendly place five minutes' drive from Saint-Germain-du-Bois and Montjay, in the Saône-et-Loire department. All sorts of animals reside here, including a donkey, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, and a pony, so you’ll be in good rural company. Guests are invited to help feed the gang in the morning and are allowed to pet the animals under supervision. Animals taken care of, turn your attention to the rest of the on-site facilities. For days spent chilling at base, get comfy on one of the sun loungers, or dial the effort up a notch with a dip in the outdoor pool and a game or two on the pétanque court. Kids can blow off steam at the playground (the climbing tower and trampoline are particular favourites) or try go-karting; for smaller children, there's also a treasure hunt. There’s a terrace area where guests can mingle; the coffee (and wine) and twice-weekly table d'hôte should go down nicely after days out walking and cycling. On the days when there isn't table d'hôte, the restaurant serves pizzas or quiche. There’s also a food shop on site selling local produce; order fresh, warm bread for the mornings and fresh, local organic veggies to be delivered once per week. The amenity block has showers, toilets and sinks, and kids get their own low toilet and sink. You won’t need to scramble around in the dark to find the loos either, as the site is lit at night. In Saint-Germain-du-Bois (five minutes' drive away), there's a charger for electric vehicles, plus a supermarket and local shops for more day-to-day groceries.

Local attractions

If you ever find yourself in the mood for a swim, there's a pretty biological lake on the outskirts of La Chapelle-Saint-Sauveur: Baignade Naturelle (10 minutes' drive). France’s Jura region is slightly further – about 45 minutes – but the area’s backdrop of mountains, vineyards, waterfalls and lakes makes for some scenic strolls, as do the Baume Caves (45 minutes). Dairy fans might like to visit the cheese museum La Maison de la Vache Qui Rit (35 minutes) for lessons in cheesemaking. Centre Eden (40 minutes) is another nice pick for those who like museums; this one's nature-focused, with a good cabinet of curiosities for kids to ogle over. For a different kind of history, tours of Château d'Arlay (half an hour) stop by grand rooms with 19th-century period decorations and an old cellar once home to a convent of monks. As for more family days out, pack up the car and choose between a waterpark, Jura Splash (25 minutes), and rides aplenty at the Parc des Combes amusement park (an hour and 10 minutes). You could also wander over to the Camping Les Arbois reception, where there are plenty more ideas for days out, as well as information on walks and biking tours that begin from the site.
