Local attractions

How best to explore this scenery? It’s up to you – there are lots of hiking and cycling trails to follow, or you can get out on horseback. Home to the Percheron breed, this area has a real history when it comes to horses so there are lots of good options around for riding. Watery activities are plentiful too – you can go fishing at Étang de Chaumont (five minutes’ drive) or spend a day at L’Étang Neuf (half an hour), which has a leisure park (open in July and August) for swimming, paddleboarding, canoeing, pedal boats and miniature golf. Fancy dipping into local heritage? Take a stroll around the medieval centre of Mortagne-au-Perche (15 minutes) or look out for buildings from across the ages on a wander around Bellême (half an hour) – it has half-timbered houses, a Romanesque church and some remnants of its medieval château. Other places to put on your list include the Abbey of La Trappe (five minutes), where you can take a walk around the peaceful grounds, and Notre-Dame de Montligeon Basilica (25 minutes), known for its fabulous stained-glass windows.
