  • Well-maintained site in a Lower Normandy orchard
  • A 20-minute walk from Sept-Forges; Domfront 15 minutes' drive
  • Seasonal outdoor pool, breakfast, communal firepit and wifi
There's so much to like about orchards – the spring blossom, the summer shade, the tasty fruit in the autumn. So whatever time of year you're after a rural retreat, take a look at La Toutinière, part of an orchard in northern France’s Orne department. Sitting pretty at the southern edge of Lower Normandy, this peaceful spot is just off the D22 road between Domfront and the village of Sept-Forges. It's about a 20-minute stroll to the latter spot, where you can admire the church, have a bite at the restaurant or set out for riverside walks along the banks of the Mayenne. Bits for the barbecue and other snacks can be picked up in Domfront, where there are several supermarkets. The facilities back at base are on the simpler side, with just the one eco toilet and no showers. In return, though, you get plenty of room to run around or play games, use of the site's hammocks, uninterrupted rural views and, if you fancy it, daily breakfasts at the owners' cottage. In the evening, folk fond of an outdoor firepit can pile up the logs and watch them burn, while teens who aren't too impressed by such old-school ents can make use of La Toutinière's wifi and amuse themselves on their gadgets instead.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: This is a really fantastic site with a super friendly English couple behind it and 2 giant dogs! We (the dog and I) turned up late after travelling all day from England and they made us feel very welcome with a cup of tea and a stay in the caravan as the weather wasn’t great. I felt very safe at the site as a solo female traveller and Fred enjoyed meeting one of their giant guard dogs. The site itself was very peaceful and natural so really great for anyone not wanting to stay surrounded by noise. I’d recommend it to any traveller who fancies seeing some of the rural French countryside!

Disliked: The lack of shower could be an issue if you stay long term but I was only there one night and had had a shower at a hotel that morning so it was no problem for me.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Perfect barefoot campsite full of character as you pitch within the small holding farm. You will have a unique experience as the lovely family take only a very small number of bookings. I arrived early in April after a lot of rain and was very kindly given the caravan to stay in. Surrounded by bird song and rural views it was a treat. Also the best breakfast I have had in years.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: We stayed here for one night on our way back to the UK after a road trip around Normandy and Brittany. The owners both speak really good English, mainly attributed to the fact that they are both English. Mandy and Dave are living a slightly alternative existence in their farmhouse with their 2 sons, 2 cats and 2 beautiful dogs (don't be put off by their size - they are big softies). The field we stayed in was extremely spacious (we were the only people there) and the toilet and shower were provided by means of a caravan conveniently located near the entrance to the field and we found it perfectly adequate. Plenty of water was provided on our arrival which is drawn from their own well and the drinking water is filtered. We had our cycles with us which enabled us to explore the local village and have a paddle in the nearby Mayenne river. It's a few kilometres to the nearest supermarket, so make sure you are well stocked before you arrive if you don't want to start driving out again once you have set up. If you like manicured pitches marked with neat hedgerows and pristine shower blocks, don't come here. However, if you like peace, nature, a slightly wilder experience, a relaxed approach to camping rules, dark skies for star gazing and interesting hosts, then book now! Mandy and Dave have some way to go to realise their dreams of renovating their ancient barns and offering some kind of mindfulness retreat, but we sincerely hope that one day this place will be even more special than it already is. We can't wait to return one day to see how they are progressing with their project. Our only regret is that we didn't take the hosts up on their kind offer to join them and some friends for a barbeque - we ate very late and crashed out early!

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Shopping around for châteaux to visit? Start off at Domfront (15 minutes' drive), where there's a fine medieval offering that comes with fab views over the Varenne river. There's also much to be said for the Château de Lassay (10 minutes), an impressive edifice indeed whose eight pointed towers overlook a pasture grazed by sheep. Taking your time to explore the Orne on two wheels? For a slightly different take on the area by bike, check out Vélorail Bagnole de l’Orne (20 minutes), a five-kilometre route that runs through the pretty Andaines forest. Pedalling these bike-like contraptions along an old railway line is certainly an ingenious way to burn off some of those holiday calories… Making La Toutinière your base while in Lower Normandy also opens up a whole range of day trips slightly further afield. Mont Saint-Michel (an hour and 15 minutes) is a must-see if you're out this way, but you might also amble around Alençon basilica (45 minutes), take in the medieval walled town of Fougères (an hour) or catch a race at Le Mans (an hour and 20 minutes).
