  • Friendly English-owned site close to the D-Day landing beaches
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Carentan and 45 of Bayeux and Cherbourg
  • Rural setting in the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park
English owned and within easy reach of D-Day landing beaches: come to Camping Le Clos Castel for a quick break from Blighty, or base yourself here for a full French hol. Brit owners Carol and Clint know what's what: as keen campers themselves, they've set the site up to include spotless amenities and plenty of space, and make it their mission to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere where everyone is made welcome. Have a chat to them around the site to find out top tips on what to see and do nearby, from investigating local markets and hikes to day trips to the D-day beaches and the likes of Bayeux and Caen. Le Clos Castel is a short stroll (about 500 metres) from its local village Raids, in Lower Normandy's Manche department half an hour's drive from Utah beach and 35 minutes' drive from Omaha. It has a countryside setting in the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park: once you've thoroughly investigated Normandy beaches on day trips, set off into the park for days of hiking, nature spotting and boat rides. The site has wifi, showers, toilets and a washing-up area available for guests' use.

Liked: Everything. What a perfect little site. So well kept, clean and tidy. In the middle of the Cherbourg peninsula so not far from many interesting places. Thank you Clint for the tip to visit Barfleur too.

Disliked: Nothing.

Powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked: A site not to be missed. A great little friendly place with hard standing/grass pitches. The 2 bathrooms are amazing with plenty of room to feel at home. The owners are very helpful when needing knowledge about the local area. Utah beach and many WW2 museums around. Supermarkets and village close by. A definite quiet place away from noisy overcrowded bigger sites. Booked 2 stayed 3 nights. Thank you Clint and Carol for a great stay.

Disliked: Busy road through the day but quietens down through the night.

Powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked: There is nothing at all not to like. This is by far the best campsite I have stayed in and I've stayed at a lot. The host was friendly, always on hand for any queries. walks around to make sure everyone is ok and takes a lot of pride in his business. The facilities were far beyond my expectations with the games room, breakfast to order if you wanted, shower and bathroom facilities always clean and well stocked. The site itself is stunningly located and peaceful. I cannot recommend enough.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Very nice, unique and silent at night (except for our own kids, sorry). Owners are fantastic and friendly. Gaming room for kids with projector for movies, pool table, petanque... Common areas very clean and tent areas with soft grass and well maintained.

Local attractions

Ask Carol and Clint for info on their best picks on activities and attractions nearby: the outdoor adventures of the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park are close to hand and it's about 15 minutes' drive from the site to the beaches overlooking Jersey. Also within 15 minutes' drive is Carentan, surrounded by wetlands and wildlife-laden marshes, but probably most famed as the scene of the Battle of Carentan in World War II (the town is between Utah and Omaha beaches). The area surrounding Carentan has several remembrance museums including the Musée Airborne at Saint-Mère-Église (25 minutes' drive) and the Normandy Tanks Museum in Catz, 20 minutes from the site. For day trips, Bayeux and Cherbourg are each 45 minutes' drive away, and Caen is an hour and five minutes; further afield, Mont Saint-Michel is within an hour and a half.
