  • Peaceful wooded site in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Clermont-Ferrand; half an hour to Vulcania
  • Outdoor pool on site, plus restaurant, bar and kids' activities
If you’re seeking some spectacular scenery for your outdoor break, the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park is a fantastic choice of location. This is one of the oldest and largest natural parks in France and it’s packed full of stunning volcanic landscapes to explore. Sitting just on the edge of the park and about 10 minutes’ drive from Riom, Camping de La Croze makes a great base for exploring this viewsome area. From here you’ll easily be able to get out to all the top attractions (including Vulcania and the Panoramiques des Dômes tourist train) or try all the area’s local activities including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and watersports. Being just a little way from the town centre means that it’s also pretty convenient to get to restaurants, shops and other amenities. The site itself is thoroughly rural in character, however – there’s always plenty of space here for guests to relax among the trees and sip their coffee quietly while listening to the birdsong. And there’s a good list of facilities here too, so you’re unlikely to get bored while you’re on site. The outdoor pool and kids’ pool are perennially popular on warm days, and the kids can also hang out at the play area or join in organised activities in high season. Games of pétanque might also be on the cards, or perhaps hiring bikes for pedalling through the surrounding area. Other handy facilities on site include a restaurant and bar, plus wifi, a launderette and bathrooms with wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Local attractions

There are lots of great hikes and bike rides to try out nearby, including the long-distance GR441 trail, which passes four kilometres from the site. The team on site are always happy to recommend trails that will suit guests’ abilities, and to point you towards good spots for horse riding, fishing, watersports and other open-air activities. If clambering up a volcano is on your wishlist, set forth to Lemptégy (half an hour’s drive), which is one of the more accessible volcanoes for hikers. Rather take it easy? Ride to the top of Puy de Dôme on the Panoramiques des Dômes train (35 minutes). To learn more about the geology of this area, a visit to Vulcania theme park (half an hour) is a must. Other days out nearby might take you to the historic city of Clermont-Ferrand (20 minutes), to the Animal Park Auvergne (an hour) or to soak in the thermal waters of Châtel-Guyon (five minutes) – most welcome after a day of uphill hiking.
