If you feel like getting well off the main tourist routes, hunker down for a peaceful break at Camping Saint Just, set in the centre of a sleepy village of the same name in a quiet corner of the Cantal department. Crossed by the meandering waters of a stream, the landscaped campsite has neat grass pitches divided by hedges and trees for extra privacy, and views over to the forested hills of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. A small playground on the campsite takes care of any kids with energy to burn off. If you’re looking for the whole family to get active, the village’s outdoor swimming pool – which is supervised and heated – is open for the free use of campsite guests during July and August only. You can also play on the neighbouring multi-purpose sport field. When it comes to the practical facilities on site, the establishment has a simple and basic shower block and washing-up sinks, which reflects the authenticity of the family campsite. There's a toilet and shower for guests with reduced mobility, four showers, four squat toilets and two conventional toilets. If you want to fire up a barbecue, pick up foodie treats from the supermarkets in Le Malzieu-Ville (20 minutes’ drive) or Val d’Arcomie (15 minutes). Fancy a night out? The cosy auberge in the village has a menu of fabulous local specialities.

  • Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
  • Reception is unmanned after 7 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.
  • If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
  • Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.
  • The charging of electric vehicles is not permitted on site.

Liked A lovely campsite in a lovely area. Clean facilities and well maintained. Helpful staff, liked the van that came round each morning with bread and other goods. Washing machine a very useful benefit. Swimming pool was well used by our older children

Liked Lovely site, friendly welcome.
Showers toilets, I’ve never seen such amazing facilities on a campsite.
The shower block is very modern and something you’d see in a top hotel.
The pictures don’t do them justice at all.
Spotlessly clean.
I expected them to be nice but you need to see them for yourself.
The pitches are huge reasonable level.
Great swimming pool.
Mobile shop arrives every morning at 9am and has many food items if you don’t want venture out.
The owners are both very helpful and very approachable.
Great for families with children or just couples like us.
I was lucky to discover this through pitch up. I’ll definitely return and stay longer now I know it’s there.
WiFi worked really well and was complimentary.
Nothing not to like.

Disliked no running water and we was even unable to make a cup of tea or cook for my kids even though nothing was told regarding no cookers

There is a kettle and a microwave available at the campsite reception, as well as a refrigerator if you want to store food. The reception is open from morning to evening during the high season (except on Tuesdays). Did you ask someone for help ? (The campsite staff can be reached by phone all day, even when the reception is closed)

Local attractions

Whizz back in time to the 19th century on a visit to the Ferme de Pierre Allègre- Ecomusée de Margeride (10 minutes’ drive) to see how peasant farmers lived over a century ago. After that, head for Garabit Viaduct (15 minutes). This ornate red-iron bridge spans the twisting River Truyère, and was constructed by Gustave Eiffel (of the Parisian tower fame) in 1884. To glimpse the steep-sided Tryuère Gorges from the water, join a guided cruise from the base of the viaduct. For more outdoor time, pack a picnic and eat it on the shores of Lac de Grandval (20 minutes) following a wild swim in cool, calm water, or go fishing for carp up close to Grandval Dam – you get a spectacular view of the barrage from the viewpoint at the Belvedere de Mallet (25 minutes). For more high-octane watersports, rent a windsurfer, kayak or paddleboard from Garabit-Mallet Leisure Centre (20 minutes). If you’d rather stick to dry land, hike up to the bizarre rock formations on the looped Calvaire de Recoux (half an hour’s walk), and continue up to the three landmark crosses at Margeride, where you’ll have views to the granite Aubrac Massif and the Monts du Cantal.
