  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with four wooded hectares
  • A 15-minute drive to river activities; 50 minutes to Puy de Dôme
  • Tennis court on site; accessible bathroom facilities
Four wooded hectares and rivers, volcanoes and forests within driving distance? Sounds peaceful, indeed – and definitely enticing for outdoorsy types of people too. Tenderly cared for, the pretty flowers and green setting of Camping Le Mont Libre are among the things previous guests (and a national award) mention. A swimming pool (open during high season) and a tennis court are among the other popular parts of the site – and facilities have been thought out well too, with the bathrooms accessible for people with reduced mobility. Halfway between the Bourbon countryside and the Auvergne (where there are volcanoes like Puy de Dôme and the splendid landscapes of the Val de Sioule), it's highly likely you'll soon be sharing top tips about all the different sceneries nearby with fellow guests. To see it for yourself, drive over to the Gorges de la Sioule in just half an hour, where there’s a via ferrata route along the 150-metre-high rocks alongside the gorges. A canoeing and rafting centre for the river is also 15 minutes’ drive away. If you’re keen to get active in other ways, head to the 18-hole golf course of Golf Vichy Forest of Montpensier 15 minutes’ drive away. It’s also possible to go horse-riding in Begues (on Arabian thoroughbreds, no less). With markets and flea markets within driving distance of the site too, a lazy day is also well spent browsing local stalls.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Convenient stopover close to motorway. Lovely views from the site and quiet. Large pitch. Gate opened 7.30am for onward travel.

Disliked: Dog poo all over the pit h when we arrived, which was smelly and we had to remove before our young children stepped in it. Toilets were very tired and ladies were being used also by men so were a bit smelly. We booked via pitch up and paid for electric but didn't get electric on arrival or a refund for the difference.

Powered grass campsite (water hook-up)

Liked: The location close to town but high up with far reaching views and peaceful atmosphere. The pitches are a mixture of sunny and shaded. It’s lovely to have a coffee shop, fresh bread and croissants and/or a drink in the evening sun. There is a tame magpie on the site who we all fell in love with. All in all a fairly basic but lovely site.

Disliked: We booked through Pitchup but there was an issue somewhere along the line which meant a tense check in after a long journey. It was our first time using Pitchup and next time I will definitely send a confirmation email to the site as well.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Lovely rural campsite. Spacious pitches which accommodated our 7m caravan. Easy access to the pitch. The facilities were good. Slightly on the older side, but there were plenty of showers and all clean and working. The was a tennis court, which my son loved. There’s a small swimming pool which was warm and perfectly adequate. The staff were great, friendly and knowledgeable. We stayed 1 night in the way to Annecy, I would recommend.

Disliked: Nothing!
