  • Peaceful family-run site by the river La Baïse in Lot-et-Garonne
  • River-based activities like fishing, swimming and canoeing
  • Outdoor pool and roomy solarium, canoe rental, tennis and volleyball
There are beaucoup watery reasons as to why one might have a stay at family-friendly Camping le Mouliat in the lush Lot-et-Garonne department: first of all, it’s right by a river (splendid), and secondly, there are river-based activities galore to get involved in from the site, from simple swims au naturel to fishing, sailing, and kayaking… Or just lazing alongside. Also smashingly, the Lot-et-Garonne department is crisscrossed by 353 hiking trails, several of these being nearby, or should you be more of a fan of a pedal-powered tour, the department is also home to 24 highly scenic cycling circuits. If you prefer to do your lolling by the pool, then that’s on the cards at this site too: the outdoor pool has a roomy terrace kitted out comfily with sunbeds, and for spells of activity designed for one to break a sweat, tennis and volleyball courts are on hand too. When guests would rather be entertained while remaining somewhat sweat free, they can challenge themselves and their adversaries to a gentle game of pétanque, or really take it down a notch with a loan of a book from the library; use the site’s free wifi service (available throughout the park) to get online; or settle down to learn the lingo from a French TV program or two. In the summer the friendly team – headed up by accommodating owners Isabelle and Hervé – organises a cracking array of fun family activities, like outdoor games (to inspire a little friendly family competition), as well as barbecue nights and Sunday lunch and aperitifs, both of which encourage inter-guest mingling. When you’re feeling peckish, pick up some snacky fodder like pizzas and ice creams at the snack bar, where freshly baked bread and croissants are also served daily to get you fed and fighting fit before starting yet another of river fun and sightseeing.

Local attractions

Many a pretty French village is easily reachable around these parts, like Fourcès, Fleurance, Mézin, Donzac, Lectoure, Larressingle, Bassoues and Nérac, all within an hour’s drive, and some within easy cycling distance. Should you opt for a visit of the latter on the list, it’s highly recommended that you don’t miss exploring l’exquisite Chateau Henry IV and the equally so Saint-Nicholas church. Another tiptop spot to rock up to is the fine former episcopal town of Condom, once an important stopover on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route; tours of its little Old Town and cathedral are just two of the highlights, visits to which you can follow with promenade around its pleasant streets, popping in and out of its Armagnac cellars for samples of the local brew. If you want to delve deeper into the town’s culture and heritage, you can also visit a local museum that’s dedicated to telling the tale of the town’s Armagnac production. If you’re a self-confessed food fanatic, there’s lots in the way of that too in the locale: pack an empty hamper into the car and head to the traditional markets around Fréchou, Nérac, Condom and Lavardac, where you’ll be able to pick up all sorts of tasty local treats to bring back to base or sample on the spot.
