  • Family-friendly Gironde site with a peaceful car-free atmosphere
  • Forest location with bike trails to Carcans Plage; bike hire on site
  • Swimming pool, yoga sessions and access to lake beach and activities
A lake on one side and the ocean on the other… what more could you want from a location for your Gironde holiday? Maybe a forest setting, so you'll have plenty of shade plus birdsong and a lovely scent of pine? Or how about easy access to all sorts of activities, from chilled-out yoga to the madcap antics of a floating aquapark? Well, you can have all of those too at Camping de la Dune Bleue – this peaceful spot is in an enviable location in the forest between Lac d’Hourtin and Carcans Plage, about 15 minutes' drive from Carcans town. As a car-free site and with wifi limited to the reception area it’s a wonderful place to disconnect from the modern world for a while and immerse yourselves in nature and outdoor activity. Once your car is parked in the car park you'll be encouraged to leave it there as much as possible, perhaps bringing bikes (or renting on site) to take out onto the bike paths around the site or setting out to walk to the beach – it’s only 10 minutes to the nearest lake beach, or 30-40 minutes wander through the woods to the gorgeously long and sandy ocean beach. There are activities galore to get stuck into here too – the site has an open-air pool and a pétanque court, and runs both kids' activities (games, creative workshops and the like) and relaxed exercise sessions (such as outdoor yoga or stretch classes) for the grownups. Guests also get a discount on sessions with the lakeside adventure park and aquapark. Paddleboarding, surfing, wakeboarding and climbing are also on offer… although you’re also more than welcome just to relax and spend the day wandering between the beach club and food truck…

Powered forest floor tent campsite

Liked Loved being in a forest listening to the insects and being so close to the lake where there are lots of water sports activities. You could hire sailing boats, windsurfing, paddle boards and kayaks. The beach is a short drive where there is good surfing conditions. Considering it said unisex toilets and showers, they are in blocks with a roof covering and they were fine, no issues and were regularly cleaned. You need to take your own toilet roll to the toilets. We ordered pastries from reception for the following day but this does need to be ordered before I think it was 6.30pm. You could also get French stick there too. There was a yoga session that you could be signed up too but I never did get chance to do it. We took our own paddle boards with us and were able to use these on the lake which was fantastic. You could get food from the beach or from a van which visited the campsite on the evenings. Each evening had something different. Chicken and chips, pizza, curries plus others. We used these a few times. We camped but you could stay in a lodge or a canvas tent that had all the necessary equipment such as beds and kitchen equipment. Lots of cycle routes too, sadly we didn’t take our bicycles but definitely would have used them if we had them with us. The campsite has its own swimming pool and is open from 11am until when reception closes which is around 8pm. There are table tennis tables on site and you have to leave your car in the car park. The site was extremely clean, you have a recycle area next to the car park so all rubbish has to be taken here.
We visited different places all around the lake too so a car is definitely a must have. The nearest supermarket is a five / ten minute drive away so would have been better if there was one closer to camp. There was a carrefour express, a spa and another bigger supermarket that you could buy food from.

Disliked The only dislike I had was a couple of cars going by in the early hours with loud music and our neighbours young children waking up crying several times a night on a couple of occasions.

Local attractions

You really won't have to go far to find something to do around here, whether you choose to wander in the woods, try out all the watersports and other fun activities at the lake or spend the day on the beach – the sandy stretch at Carcans Plage is several miles long, so there's plenty of space for surfing, picnics, paddling and whatever else you fancy doing. You will of course be allowed to take your car out for a drive too – perhaps to visit some of the vineyards of the famed Médoc region? There’s a great cluster of wineries around Pauillac (45 minutes’ drive), many of them in grand châteaux that are worth a visit for the architecture as much as the tastings. There's also the option of a day trip to Bordeaux (an hour and 15 minutes) to visit the Cité du Vin and see sights like the Miroir d’Eau and Grosse Cloche.
