It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly glamping site five minutes' drive from Saint-Rémy
- Half an hour's drive from the wineries of Bergerac and Saint-Émilion
- Outdoor pool, hot tub, fishing pond, bouncy castle and games room
Saint-Émilion… Bergerac… Monbazillac… all music to the ears of those fond of a glass of French vino. And all easily visitable for folks staying at Les Cottages en Périgord, a rural Dordogne site five minutes’ drive from the little village of Saint-Rémy.
Oui, get set to raise a toast to this tiptop location, surrounded by vineyards and in a prime position for a bit of pottering around the local wineries. Saint-Émilion’s half an hour’s drive in one direction, Bergerac’s about the same in the other, and in the middle are plenty more producers to poke around.
It’s not all about the wine though – the Périgord region is also famed for its foodie offerings, and you’re within easy reach of lots more besides (castles, canoeing and cycle trails, for starters).
And the site itself is fairly ripe with things to amuse, too – there’s a splendid freeform outdoor pool with loungers for sunbathing sessions and a hot tub for blissful open-air bubbles. A fishing pond, bouncy castle and games room should keep the nippers entertained for a while, allowing the grownups a chance to chill out (and perhaps crack open a bottle, in the interests of supporting the local economy, of course).

Local attractions
If you’ve a taste for a tipple or two, you’ll no doubt want to plan to visit a few of the local vineyards for tours and tastings – it’ll take you half an hour or so to drive to the hubs of Saint-Émilion and Bergerac, or around 40 minutes to get to Monbazillac to sample the dessert wines. If you’d rather leave the car behind, hire bikes on site to pedal off to more local châteaux and wineries within half an hour.
There’s more to both major towns than just drinks though – Saint-Émilion’s well-preserved medieval centre has led to it being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there are some interesting underground tours to show you what lurks beneath the streets. Meanwhile, Bergerac’s a great place to board a river trip on a traditional gabarre boat.
Need to work up an appetite for the famed Périgord cuisine? The Dordogne river is 20 minutes away by car, and a fine place for a canoe paddle en famille. There are also walking and bike routes through the surrounds from the village of Saint-Rémy if you’d prefer to stick to dry land.
