  • Spectacular accommodation on a duck and foie gras farm
  • A couple of minutes' drive from Monsac and 30 from Bergerac
  • Indoor pool, games room, and farm animals to meet and greet
What a seriously, spectacular, Périgord stunner. In the Dordogne a couple of minutes' drive from the lush little village of Monsac, the family-friendly site of La Ferme de Sirguet is a definite must: on a duck and foie gras farm with first-rate facilities and swish accommodation in a wildlife haven and forest setting. Your first gentle activity on arriving (unpacking can wait until later) is to set off around the grounds on a peaceful ramble, stopping off to watch the ducks being fed and to meet an greet (as often as poss) the rest of the farm menagerie including sheep, goats, pigeons and chickens. Then fully investigate the excellent leisure facilities: a big indoor pool await for guests' use, there's a playground for the kids (grownups should aim to do no more than idle alongside), and a clubhouse has a TV, wifi, a library and kids' games. Off site, there's golf and horse riding nearby, you could tackle canoeing in the waters of the Dordogne river to the north, and lengthy days of town and city sightseeing days are within half an hour's drive: Beaumont-du-Périgord is 15 minutes away, Villereal 25 and Bergerac 30. And then there are the castles, the caves, the medieval villages and – for tis the Dordogne – cuisine and vino of all sorts to keep one busy all day long. All units are fully self contained and all have their own terraces with outdoor furniture.

Local attractions

Around 100 kilometres of marked trails wind around the Dordogne for cycling, hiking and horse riding for those feeling active... if not, Bergerac vineyards such as Monbazillac or Pécharmant are within half an hour's drive. If it's castles you seek, it's 10 minutes from the farm to Château de Lanquais and 30 to Château de Biron, the medieval keep under Cathar and Plantagenêt control during its lengthy history. Abbey aficionados have the famed 12th-century cloisters at Caduin to potter around, 25 minutes' drive away in a greenly scenic valley between Bergerac and Sarlat. Medieval villages? Try spectacular Sarlat and La Roque-Gageac, each within an hour, or stick closer to home with a trip to Beynac half an hour away, in its handsome cliff-backed setting on the north bank of the Dordogne. Much recommended too is a trip much further back in time to the Lascaux caves, famed throughout the world for their hundreds of paintings and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
