Looking for somewhere novel to book for that special celebration with family or friends? Bet you’ve never thought of staying in a wine barrel… but now here’s your chance. At Barrels by the Lake, you’ll sleep in refurbished (and surprisingly spacious) oak wine barrels – each more than a century old. And what’s more, you’ll have the whole place to yourselves.
Tucked away on the shores of a private lake 10 minutes’ drive from Central Croatia’s historic town of Ludbreg, the site sleeps up to five guests in total, with each barrel having double or single beds in about four square metres of floor area. All bedding and towels are provided, and a short stroll away is a pristine bathroom with a shower and separate toilet. There’s also a covered dining area with basic kitchen supplies, including a kettle, coffee and tea, plus a mini bar with a selection of cold drinks; outside is a shaded terrace for leisurely alfresco dining.
Although fishing is not allowed, you can swim, kayak, sunbathe and take lakeside saunters, spending your days doing as much or as little as you want. And if that’s not enough for you to destress completely, you can always book sessions in the on-site sauna for a small fee.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.- No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- Facilities/activities including sauna are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
- The park only allows dogs up to 30kg.
- Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Liked All of it! Absolutely gorgeous hosts, barrels, lake, lots to do! there was SUP, a Kayak, table tennis, a SAUNA! It was all fantastic. Incredible value for money. Our hosts had many suggestions of places we go nearby. It was so tranquil and beautiful.
BOVRIL THE DOG!
The best guy around! I fell in love with Bovril and I think he fell in love with me *fingers crossed*.
I hope to come back one day.

Local attractions
Be sure to have a look at Ludbreg (five minutes’ drive); this gem of a town sits on the River Drava, and here you can admire the intricate frescoes in ornate St Nicholas Church or learn about local history at the heritage museum. Have a wander around its cobbled squares and settle in for a coffee at a terrace bar.
Further afield is the Baroque confection of Trakošćan Castle (about an hour), sitting on a forested hilltop and open for tours of its opulent interiors. There’s more fanciful Baroque architecture to be spotted in Varaždin (half an hour), which has a vast feudal fortress at the centre of its photogenic old town.
If your interest lies more with being outdoors, take long scenic hikes on way-marked trails in the forested Ivanšćica Mountains (an hour), or follow the route to the clifftop ruins of a medieval fortress and palace at Kalnik (55 minutes).
