What a spot for a glamping adventure – a lush forest location with spectacular views across Costa Rica’s Alto Macho Mora mountains.
Sesancestros, a 40-minute drive from the city of San Isidro de El General, is a high-altitude luxury site where you can interact with exotic birds, walk private trails across a suspension bridge or take in views of waterfalls. This site in the Pérez Zeledó canton also has a viewing platform overlooking the Valle del General.
The glamping units all have queen-size beds, private bathrooms with whirlpool tubs or a sauna, and kitchens decked out with an electric induction hob, refrigerator, oven, microwave, kettle, coffee dripper, pots and all the basic crockery. If you’ve forgotten any camping essentials, chances are you’ll be able to hire them on site too.
You can watch the sunrise without getting out of your comfortable bed, and at the end of the day, on clear nights, watch the Milky Way sparkle and dance in the sky above since there is no light pollution in these mountains.
Myriad jungle and mountain walks – 14 miles' worth in fact – are accessed directly from the glampsite. Some you may need a guide for; all go through stunning countryside. And don’t leave your pets behind: dogs are more than welcome to join you on your Costa Rica adventures here.

Dogs
- The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
- The park only allows dogs up to 15kg.
- Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Local attractions
Hiking trails lace through the rainforest at Quebradas Biological Center (45 minutes’ drive), a nature reserve dotted with small waterfalls and high observation points. The area features abundant birdlife, and you might also be able to spot the occasional sloth hanging from a tree during your exploration.
If you’re into plants and flowers, head to Jardines Secretos (one hour), where you can stroll among lush ferns, bamboo groves and other tropical vegetation; there are also turtle ponds and colourful butterflies; at Orquilandia (one hour and 15 minutes), you can admire more than 2,000 varieties of orchids in a forested setting.
In addition to hiking trails for various abilities, Cloudbridge Nature Reserve (one hour and 10 minutes) has guided tours that take in cloud forest and waterfalls. Whether alone or with an expert naturalist, it pays to keep your eyes peeled for vibrantly coloured butterflies and birds like the resplendent quetzal.
