  • Countryside site 4km from Vielsalm
  • Ten minutes from the Coo waterfalls and 20 minutes from Luxembourg
  • Pool, sports courts, playground and snack bar
Belgian town, Belgian countryside and activities and attractions all around are what's up for grabs at Camping Les Neufs Prés, a family-friendly site in a green and forested spot only ten minutes' drive from the famed Coo waterfalls. Based in the lovely – and woody – Province of Luxembourg, Les Neufs Prés is in a rural setting but four kilometres from the scenic town of Vielsalm and 20 minutes from the Luxembourg border. It's near a river for those angling for fishing or canoeing, in an area crisscrossed by kilometres' worth of walking and cycling routes. This is a handsomely laid out park with well-maintained facilities: guests have access to a heated pool, courts for tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball, a play area, a TV room, and a snack bar for drinks and bites. The hot showers are free, and there are also toilets, a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Liked: Site location and layout was great. I can imagine in warm dry weather the site is open, spacious, flat, family friendly and welcoming. The river running through it is spectacular and it’s located close enough to activities and shops in the area. Plenty of room for motorhomes that have their own facilities. I think it was a reasonable price for the location.

Disliked: Arrived at the end of the season after some rain in the area. The welcome was muted but ok. There were plenty of pitches available for us in a campervan but they were very muddy; I wouldn’t have wanted to be in a tent. The facilities were clean but toilets and showers were in separate rooms. There were only two showers each for men and women on this side of the site but they had been renovated and were bright and spacious. The toilets, also clean because few people were on the site using them, but antiquated with no lighting in the dark evenings and early mornings (I think a timer needed resetting after the summer) and had no toilet paper provided or hand washing facilities.

Liked: The site had large motor home pitches, although they were not clearly marked out, with access to the toilet block nearby. They is an outdoor swimming pool onsite, which you are given wristbands to allow you free access to. It does have a lifeguard. This was lovely, especially as it was really hot when we were there. This closed at 6pm. There was also a large playground, which would be ideal for younger children. We only stayed one night mid journey to elsewhere, so didn’t see much of the area.

Disliked: The toilet blocks were a little dated and didn’t provide any toilet roll, so make sure you take your own. You had to go next door to the shower room for a sink to wash your hands. We had read many reviews about what a quiet campsite it was, but we had a few strange experiences with other residents nearby which ruined our peace, one who started his motorbike and then left it running whilst they all sat on deckchairs nearby for over 10-15 mins on more than one occasion. Another who was working on his motorbike and who thought it was acceptable to rev it on a regular basis throughout the afternoon and evening. There was also a family who let their dogs roam off the lead around other peoples camping areas. We didn’t complain as we were only staying one night.

Local attractions

Ten minutes from Camping Les Neufs Prés are the Waterfalls of Coo, reckoned by the campsite team to be the best-known falls in Belgium and a haven for hikers around its foamy heights. An amusement park is at the foot of the falls, along with spectacular views of the Amel Valley and a more active vibe taking on kayaking, cycling or swinging about in the trees. Museums covering the history of the area as well as its role in World War II are in the region too, such as the Bulge Relics Museum four kilometres away at Vielsalm and the Baugnez 44 Historical Center at Malmedy, a much bigger affair also detailing the Bulgey battle. Also worth a look are the Musée de Wanne, telling the tale of Ardenne rural life, and the museum on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, venue of the Belgian Grand Prix, nearby at Stavelot. A 20-minute drive will take you over the border into Luxembourg City, for swish days around the Grand Ducal Palace, the Place d'Armes square and – camera needed – the Passerelle viaduct.
