The folk at Holiday Village Knokke certainly have a knack for setting guests up for top family hols. This green and well-maintained holiday village is a mere two kilometres from Knokke beach and a handy little tram that runs along the spectacular North Sea coast. This well-equipped site has park-wide wifi, a launderette, a spacious amenities block with hot showers and a playground for the kids. Self-catering is made easy here by barbecue-friendly rules and a supermarket that's just opposite the site on the N49 road. Getting out to see the best of this part of Belgium is simple too – Holiday Village Knokke sorts organised tours for guests to join, an the scenic cityscapes of Bruges (25 minutes) and Ghent (55 minutes) are within easy reach by car if you fancy self-organised jaunts. Both are also quick to get to by train if you don’t want to worry about parking once there – Knokke-Heist station is a 10-minute walk away. Fancy some local explores on two wheels? Cycling is all the rage across the Low Countries, but it's a particular pleasure at this well-connected spot. Holiday Village Knokke hires out bikes of all shapes and sizes (including some electric models) that you can take for a spin down to the seafront or inland through the green, flat landscape of the West Flanders polders – the bike lanes start on the nearest road to the site entrance.

Local attractions

Knokke town centre (a few minutes' drive) has a well-maintained beachfront promenade with shops and seaside eateries – every August it’s also the backdrop for the spectacular International Fireworks Festival. It's home to Belgium's biggest and glitziest casino, too, so perhaps swing by for a round of roulette or two if you feel that Lady Luck's on your side. There are loads of other beaches hereabouts, many of which have a more natural feel. Het Zwin coastal nature reserve (20 minutes) is one such spot. Bring your binoculars if heading here – the place bills itself as Belgium's premier 'international airport for birds'. Don't rule out cross-border trips to the beach either – Kruishoofd (25 minutes) is just over the border in the Netherlands and has wide sandy beaches and windswept dunes to admire. Local culture options include Heist's Sincfala museum (10 minutes), Oostkerke castle (10 minutes) and Bruges’ Gothic belfries and medieval churches (25 minutes). Gorgeous Ghent (55 minutes) also has its Castle of the Counts, guided boat tours along medieval canals and, of course, the far-famed Ghent Altarpiece to see.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite (superior)

Liked: Great location, a level 15 walk into town, and 5 minutes from the train station, very clean showers and toilets

Disliked: small and very close pitches, so best to book the XL pitch also, the toilet block needs a modesty panel inside the door, as its very open to people sat in on the pitch opposite

Liked: Unfortunately we did not get to stay there as I didn’t book a Motorhome with an awing slot. When I contacted the site they were very helpful and let me cancel it.
