There’s a decidedly green theme to the pics of this place – take a quick flick through and you’ll see trees, bushes and plants all around the site, along with pleasingly scenic walking and bike routes through the surrounding forest. Add in the fact that you’re right alongside the Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten Canal and you’ll know this is a peaceful and pretty spot in a rural location… but only 15 kilometres from the centre of Antwerp.
There's a good collection of facilities on site, including playgrounds and a multisports field for football, tennis, basketball or volleyball. Gather your own team and/or opponents, or join in with games organised by site staff in the summer; they’re also on hand throughout the high season for various other activities, including fun stuff for kids, family bingo nights and themed dinners.
On nights when there’s not a themed dinner or barbie, eats can be had at the site’s own bistro – a Spanish-themed place where you can feast on full meals or select a goodly amount of tapas. You can of course cook up your own food if you prefer – barbecues are welcome and it’ll take you five minutes or so to pedal over to a supermarket for all the necessaries.

Local attractions
Antwerp’s full of things to do for all ages, and has a particularly fine clutch of museums. The Red Star Line museum, which tells the story of the European exodus to America, the Rubens House, dedicated to the artist’s life and work, and the Plantin-Moretus Museum are all worth a stop.
Stylish visitors won’t want to miss the MoMu fashion museum and the various places dedicated to the city’s famed diamonds, and there’s a beer tour nearby at the De Konick brewery for those who are less fussed about the shiny stuff. If you prefer days out in the open air, take a walk along the banks of the Scheldt river or through the historic Grote Markt district, looking up to see the beaut designs on some of the buildings’ façades. The Middelheim Museum is a great place for family visits too, with artworks in an outdoor space and plenty of scope for running about.
When you’re ready to skip the city and hang out in the fresh air, there are plenty of routes to explore in the forest around the site and along the canalside, with good paths for ambling and pedalling along. Detailed maps can be picked up in reception and there are charging points for those of you that need a power assist for your electric bike.
