  • Dog-friendly alpine site with views over southern Carinthia
  • Terraced pitches 10 minutes’ drive from Koralpe; hikes nearby
  • Small farm shop and a pond on site; guided quad biking tours available
At 1,200 metres above sea level in the Austrian Alps, there’s little to distract you at BergSpektive unless you count wisps of clouds and the sloping mountains (which are green in the summer and often white in the winter). The terraced pitches have what can only be described as a tremendous view over southern Carinthia – and, as a bonus for pet owners, they’re dog-friendly too. This alpine site does not sacrifice any modern facilities despite its high altitude: there’s a fitness room with cardio equipment, a modern unisex toilet and shower, electricity, water, wifi, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up station with a fine, fine view – and the whole thing is fenced for protection from the mountains. Soak up the mountain air in the beer garden at the site’s tavern (which is open Wednesday to Sunday during high season), where drinks options consist of organic beers, regional lemonades, excellent spritzers and top Austrian wines. For food, you might like to order meat loaf produced from the site’s very own Highland beef cattle. All of the main courses are inspired by Carinthian tradition. The small farm shop sells the likes of fish, honey, eggs, milk, beef burgers and bacon or salami that has been air dried in the site’s cellar. All of the water on site comes from a mountain spring. And how to relax? Unwind by the pond, which was used centuries ago as a mill pond and now has a natural water system. If your idea of unwinding involves a bit of action instead, join a guided electric quad biking tour through the local hills, dales, forest, meadows and streams (category B driver’s licence is required).

Local attractions

Visiting when the snow’s laid over the Alps? What a treat it will be that you’re based just a short drive from the Koralpe (10 minutes’ drive) ski resort, which has a small selection of well-groomed slopes which are all the fashion for snowboarding, skiing, tobogganing or snowshoe hiking. Hikers, listen up too. The Koralpe hiking area has heaps of space for you to track down hiking trails to lakes, waterfalls and views that go as far as the Julian Alps and the Karawanks. Some spots to check out might be Poms Wasserfall (50 minutes) or Grosser Speikkogel (55 minutes). Trade in the hiking boots for something different when you’re ready, like mountain biking trails, paragliding (including tandem flights a short drive away), archery, bocce ball and model aircraft flights.
