  • Great Ocean Road half an hour’s drive, central Melbourne 50 minutes
  • Gated property with camp kitchen; games and movie nights available
Looking for a handy Victoria stopover to or from Tasmania on the car ferry ‘Spirit of Tasmania’? Lara Hobby Horse Centre of Excellence is a mere 15 minutes’ drive up the road from Cunningham Pier in Geelong. This back-to-basics gated property is centred on an original country farmhouse and surrounded by five acres of level paddocks and fields filled with livestock. If you’re coming in from Tasmania on a late sail, arrivals later than 10 pm are accepted by prior negotiation. And when you wake up in the morning, you can meet-and-greet the grazing sheep (occasionally you can feed them too), horses and free-range rabbits. The farm is closely guarded by Zippy the border collie, so dogs – with the exception of companion animals – are not allowed. Campfires, games and film nights centre around the communal camp kitchen, where guests can gather to eat, make new friends and cook supper on the barbecue (when fires are permitted). Kids with you? There’s room in the orchard for them to have a run around, and they can use the indoor play area too.
