  • Friendly Limestone Coast site a short stroll from a swimming lake
  • A kilometre from town and a short drive from Canunda National Park
  • Campers' kitchen, barbecue area and campfires allowed
If you're delving around South Australia's Limestone Coast, and desire to also delve into some South Australian wine, caves, national park wildlife and cooling off in clear calm waters, mosey along to this friendly lakeside park between Adelaide and Melbourne. Millicent Lakeside Caravan Park is a family-run site, an easy amble from a serene swimming lake, within easy reach of lots of natural attractions and less than an hour's drive from the country's famed Coonawarra vineyards. 4x4 trails, wildlife watching and hiking at the Canunda National Park can be accessed within a short drive to the west, and more ancient sites can be seen at the Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park around 20 kilometres away. Bag some supplies in Millicent town to fire up on a barbie or campfire back at base: there's a campers' kitchen, a barbecue area and stacks of room and plenty of shade among the park's tall trees. And if you don't want to cook in these laidback surroundings? A mighty popular Millicent fish and chip shop is next to the site.

Local attractions

The park's peaceful Limestone Coast setting is a couple of minutes' walk from the waters of Millicent Swimming Lake, and two from the birdwatching and nature reserve of Lake McIntyre. One of the biggest freshwater lakes in Australia, Lake Bonney, is about 13 kilometres to the south-west for sailing and canoeing. Edging Lake Bonney are the coastal dunes, limestone cliffs and bushland of the Canunda National Park, a popular place for 4X4, dirtbike trailing, bushwalking and fishing. Anglers can also cast off along the coast at Beachport, Southend and Carpenters Rocks nearby, and at the Little Blue Lake at Mount Schank. Not to be confused with the above, the Blue Lake of Mount Gambier, about half an hour's drive away is a jaw-droppingly beaut spot, made up of the cobalt blue waters of an extinct volcanic crater. As the lake is a water supply, fishing, swimming and boating aren't allowed, but you can book tours of the volcanic landscape around it, or take the 3.6-kilometre trail to the volcano's viewing points and the underpass between the lake and the Leg of Mutton Lake crater. Cavers can go exploring at the Tantanoola caves or dive into the subterranean waters of the limestone caverns on an underground diving trip, while those of a more sedate disposition can traverse the Coonawarra wine region, less than an hour away.
