  • Calm and quiet wildlife haven 20 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads both within 40 minutes' drive
  • Handy for the area's annual music festivals
Not only is Maca’s Camping Ground splendidly placed for trips to Mount Jerusalem National Park (a handy 15 minutes’ drive away), it’s got some pretty spectacular views of it too, and the beaches of Byron Bay are a mere 40 minutes by car. Looking out over the northern New South Wales countryside, Maca’s lies just off the Main Arm Road north-west of Mullumbimby town in the Northern Rivers region, 12 kilometres from Mullumbimby and 30 kilometres from Byron Bay; the closest beaches are 20 minutes’ drive away, and Mount Warning and Mount Uki are both within about 45 minutes’ drive. The site is in a calm and quiet wildlife haven dotted with macadamia and chestnut trees – while on site (peaceful day and night), collect bags of macadamia nuts and pick mulberries to munch straight from the bush – this place is so chilled and friendly you’ll be planning your return visit even before you’ve had time to settle in. For birdwatchers and nature spotters there’s heaps of wildlife like bush turkeys and peacocks around too, and if you’re up for getting out and about around the local area (highly recommended), bring a good pair of walking shoes because there’s also plenty of bushwalking to be done up the mountain. As befits a site as scenic and peaceful as this, campfires are allowed so you’ll be able to spend your evenings out under the stars should that be your pitchside fancy, and if you’re into eating alfresco then the barbecue area takes care of this easily too, with all fare easily prepared beforehand at the well-equipped campers’ kitchen. The owners are often hailed as friendly, helpful and extra accommodating, providing a shuttle service to several music festivals that take place locally throughout the year when they’re in full swing.

Local attractions

A short and simple 20-minute drive from beaches and the town of Brunswick Heads off the famed Bruce Highway, Macas is well placed for a stopover while road tripping around Australia’s spectacular East Coast. Byron Bay, about 40 minutes’ drive away, is known and travelled to for its beaches, surfing and scuba diving sites and fun party vibe. On the headland too is Cape Byron State Conservation Park, with walking trails, a lighthouse and scenic lookouts, and between June and November you can spy humpback whales from spots like Captain Cook Lookout. For heaps of spectacular walking trails, Jerusalem National Park is adjacent to the grounds of Maca’s Camping Ground, or otherwise a 10-minute pootle will take you right to its border.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Location

Disliked: Unfortunately there wasn't even a location to pay for the remainder of our accomodation (No reception), the toilet block was a bit of a mess and there was faint smells of Nimbin in the air. Long term residents put us off the place especially with no clue on where to pay and no check in instructions or instructions where to camp. Wouldn't recommend.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful little spot in a green location, lots of macadamias to collect & break open :) Easy to find. I booked through pitchup.com, I couldn’t raise the owner on the phone, i also found a different number online. I emailed Dave & he answered quickly. We found Dave the owner (very friendly but a little disorganised) at his house up the hill, but he said just camp anywhere & he’ll find you tomorrow to collect the fees. Sure enough, someone else visited the next morning. I’d recommend you do that too. The hot shower & toilet, cooking & washing facilities are great. Even a fridge if you need it in the communal area.

Disliked: No obvious place to go when you first arrive, & I felt a bit uncomfortable going into someone’s home to find them…
