  • On a 250-acre National Trust farm with stunning sea views
  • Wildlife haven five minutes' walk from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Firewood or charcoal available to buy for campfires and barbecues
In an utterly lush location just four miles north of St Davids, Celtic Camping in Pembrokeshire is based on the 250-acre working and wildlife-laden National Trust farm of Pwll Caerog, part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. And then there’s the beach: the pebbly cove of Aber Pwll is at the foot of the farm about five minutes’ walk away. You’ll be reeling with glee at the views from all around here, right across the Irish Sea and Abereiddy Bay with slate quarry-filled Blue Lagoon, a deeply desirable spot for diving and twice host of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. If you want walkies, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 500 metres from the farm and coastal trails run from Abereiddy to the village of Porthgain in one direction, and to Whitesands Bay via St Davids Head in the other. This is a relaxed and friendly site with loads of space for all: dogs, families, individuals and couples included. Toilets and showers are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis by a dedicated cleaning team. During peak season, the site opens up a restaurant for breakfast and evening meals. There's a shop on site during high season, as well as musical entertainment every Saturday evening during the summer months. The site also has a large temporary indoor dining area, but you might reckon this is one of the most viewsome places around to eat alfresco: campfires and barbecues are – naturally – allowed, and firewood or charcoal can be bought from the amiable Celtic Camping team.

Upper Abereiddi Field primitive grass campsite

Liked: Loved the facilities and the size of the site. Felt like there was lots of space. Even in the kitchen area there was lots of space when the weather was really rough. The views were amazing. The staff were ever helpful upon arrival and made sure we knew where to go and where we could find everything. Would 100% stay again. Although never used but looked like there were lots of activities that can be utilised when the weather is good.

Pen Berry Field primitive grass campsite

Liked: Good hot showers with several hooks to hang up stuff, big communal spaces where to chill out if terrible weather, access to the site by tarmac roads so no need to worry about getting stuck in mud, the camp site lawn well maintained and pretty dry even when raining because it is on a bit of a slope rather than sitting on low-land, great view, cold water points & dishwashing near the camping sites and if need hot water for dishwashing those available at the central wash/shower units, good waste recycling.

Disliked: Can get very windy by the sea and not much vegetation protecting, rather long walk to the toilets from the campsite (only a problem in night and rain).

Amphitheatre Field powered grass campsite

Liked: Friendly staff on arrival. The location is fantastic right next to coastal path. The site was spacious lots of room for everyone to spread out. Facilities basic but fine. Shop was again good for essentials but need to take your own stuff with you really. Had a lovely stay.

Disliked: Some areas could do with a refurb: toilet/shower block for example. Expanding the shop would be good because it is a long way out. A games room might be a good idea.

Upper Abereiddi Field powered grass campsite

Liked: The position was lovely with incredible views and great walks from the site itself. The small bay near the campsite had a seal cub and mother in the shallow waters, a beautiful sight. The blue lagoon is a short walk away. Staff very friendly and although the site was busy for bank holiday there was plenty of space. Very laid back atmosphere.

Disliked: The facilities were very rustic at best.

Lower Abereiddi Field powered grass campsite

Liked: The view was stunning and it was lovely to watch the sunset from the campervan. A nice gentleman let us borrowed some levellers as the van was on a hill.

Disliked: Sadly there’s more to dislike than like. Facilities were awful and a fair walk to get to which isn’t that great at night. We are used to camping with basic fasciitis however they were just so dirty and didn’t even look like they had been cleaned once during our stay. They take large group bookings and so we were shocked on arrival at how many groups of people there were. It genuinely felt like a party scene with lots of alcohol consumption and loud chatter. There was very loud music coming from somewhere on site and It was impossible to get our young children to sleep. The worst part was the very loud music, sounded like band, which started at 7:30am!! I genuinely thought o was coming to a peaceful coastal campsite where I could sit and w got the views but this was impossible due to the loud volumes of music and drinkers! Thank god we were only staying one night!

Local attractions

Coasteering, kayaking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing and other hair-raising and scenic adventures are all around, with several activity centres easily reachable from Celtic Camping; the site staff can arrange something for those who’d like to plunge in. If you’re taking to the area under your own steam, Pembrokeshire has dozens of eye-wateringly pretty beaches to pick from: award-winning Whitesands, about 40 minutes’ walk from Abereiddy Bay, is a hit with surfers for the breaks on its northern end. A little further along the coast from Whitesands and towards the north end of St Brides Bay on St Davids Peninsula, slip around to the fishing village and harbour of Solva to drop jaw at the views around the Griben coastal walk. Pick up freshly dressed Pembrokeshire crab at the village seafood shop for later back at the barbie: three pubs, two cafés and two restaurants are around too for a pitstop. The Puffin Shuttle coastal bus goes from Solva to Britain’s smallest city St Davids three times a day in summer: get the early one to see the cathedral properly as well as Bishops Palace beside it.
