Cwm Deri Vineyard: Secluded pitches

General

  • Small site on a vineyard 20 minutes' drive from Pembroke
  • Sandy beaches around 20 minutes away in Tenby and Saundersfoot
  • Coffee shop, restaurant and shop with wines and other local products

A vineyard visit poses a perennial problem: who’s going to be tasked with driving home? Come along to Cwm Deri Vineyard for the best answer of all: bag a berth here and no one need get behind the wheel – huzzah.

Pembrokeshire may not seem an obvious spot for a winemaking business, but this place 20 minutes north of Pembroke has been growing grapes and other fruit successfully since the early 90s, and now produces a tempting range of wines, mead and liqueurs, all of which you can sample on site before stocking up on your faves at the shop. A walking trail wends its way through the vines and surrounding woods so you can build up an appetite to take over to the restaurant for lunch or the coffee shop for afternoon tea (followed by a short stroll back to your digs for a snooze…).

Taking a break from the wine for a while (probably a good idea now and then), this is an excellent spot to reach the walks, beaches and castles that Pembrokeshire’s famed for. Get as sandy and muddy as you like, safe in the knowledge that back on site is a toasty heated bathroom with hot showers (possibly followed by a glass of something…).

If you're looking for a grownup getaway, the grass touring caravan pitches on site are reserved for adults only; kids are welcome on the hardstanding pitches and tent areas and in the glamping units. A gate separates adults-only and family areas, but the facilities are shared between both. Dogs are also welcome on site as long as they're kept on leads.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 01/03 and 31/10.

The restaurant is open between 01/03 and 31/10.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £0.50 ($0.87) applies for the use of the shower.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

The site has a disabled access toilet, however ramp access to the building is only available between 10am and 5pm.

The restaurant is only open for lunch from 12pm to 2pm Wednesday to Sunday and there is also a barbecue takeaway service on Saturday evenings between 6pm and 6.30pm.

Lovely site friendly staff, shop, cafe convenient.

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities are minimalist with just one for the whole site. The staff were reluctant to let people use the onsite showers due to coving! Not sure how coving restrictions stop the showers from being safe.

Very peaceful location and no road noise. Had electric, water and waste facilities but had to use own toilet/shower which wasn't a problem for us. Nice friendly staff who went out of their way to let us enjoy the experience of tasting the produce with an accompanying cheese board. All very nice. The lunch menu looked good value although we didn't get to sample it.

    Disliked:

Motorhome check in is from 2pm and this is the time the kitchen closes for lunch. It's a few miles walk to the nearest pub/restaurant for food if you need it. On the hardstanding pitch the pitches are quite close together so would try to book the grass pitch next time. Although this time it was good as heavy rain was expected and we didn't want to get stuck on grass.

Local attractions

You’ve got to catch a castle or few if you come to these parts – Pembrokeshire’s dotted with fine examples. With a drive of 20 minutes or so you can take in the ruins of Carew Castle (often handsomely reflected in the neighbouring mill pond), stroll around seaside Manorbier Castle or head to Pembroke to see the fortress where Henry VII was born.

And you’ve probably got to take in a beach or few too: top picks include the traditional resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot (20 minutes’ drive), the surfers’ fave Freshwater West (half an hour) and the utterly gorgeous Barafundle Bay, often tipped as one of the world’s best (half an hour).

For animals a bit bigger than the site’s rabbits, take a trip to Manor Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or the Secret Owl Garden (15 minutes, and signposted rather than secret). Birdwatching boat trips to Skomer from Dale and dolphin-spotting safaris from St Davids are both about 45 minutes away.

Must see

  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (9.1 kilometers)
  • Pembroke Castle (10.2 kilometers)
  • St Davids Cathedral (31.7 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Tudor Merchant's House (14.0 kilometers)
  • Stackpole Estate (15.9 kilometers)
