  • Dog-friendly West Wales site on a working dairy and sheep farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Oakwood and Folly Farm
  • Firepits allowed; food shop, café nearby
Wake up to views of the Preseli Hills before mapping out your way to castles, waterfalls and beaches… on the border between Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, Camping at Beca is in West Wales, half an hour’s drive from the Preseli Hills landscape and the seven-mile Golden Road footpath, where geologists believe the bluestones of Stonehenge came from. This dog-friendly rural retreat is part of a working dairy and sheep farm run by a Welsh-speaking family. Intriguingly, it’s named after the Rebecca Riots of 1839, which commemorates the history of how a local farmer and his crew destroyed the first tollgate at Efailwen. While you won’t be attempting such a feat, walking and cycling fans alike will have plenty of peaceful walks and the National Cycle Route 47 from Fishguard to Swansea to take on. This cycling route is only 10 minutes' drive away… and for those of you looking to trade in the wheels for buckets and spades, the nearest beach is in Amroth, 25 minutes’ drive away. When you’re ready to wind down after a day out, settle by one of the firepits on site. Perhaps you’ll want to bring snacks from the small food shop and petrol station 10 minutes’ walk away (handily, they sell essentials such as fresh bread and milk). There’s a café and fish and chip shop here too, when you need hot food in a hurry. Guests at Camping at Beca will have access to both toilets and showers during their stay.

Bell tent

Liked: Literally just got back from 4 nights at camping@beca in wales. We all had an amazing time & really loved the site & location 😀 the bell was deceptively spacious & comfortable for the 5 of us 👍 The owners went above & beyond in making us feel welcome & that nothing was too much trouble (they even turned the generator on in the bar so we could charge our phones)! We will definitely be staying her again & recommending to friends & family.

Bell tent

Liked: Location has spectacular views and is truly off the beaten track. The hosts were very friendly and made you feel at home at the site. It’s a really small site which means you’ll only see a couple of other campers, farmers and locals visiting the bar. It’s a great place to use as a base for Pembrokeshire and have a fun glamping experience. If the weather is dry you’ll have a great time, if it’s wet you’ll need wellies and accept it’s going to get muddy. If you hate mud, wasps and basic toilets best look elsewhere 😀

Disliked: Facilities like toilets and shower are basic so you’ll need to be prepared for that. The tent we had was fine and had everything you’d need for basic camping like kettle, cups etc, it had enough beds for 2 adults/3kids which meant we didn’t have much drying place for wet clothes/coats, maybe some hooks would be good.

Bell tent

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: No warm welcome - lady behind bar was too busy chatting with locals to give us any information on our arrival other than 'our tent was fourth along'. Bearing in mind we arrived at 9pm and it was getting dark, I found this very rude and inhospitable. She didn't even want to take my payment when I offered it to her, telling me tomorrow night would be ok. The tiny bar was packed full of men drinking and I felt very uncomfortable walking through. It almost felt like I was disturbing them by turning up to camp! No log burner in bell tent as expected - instead we had a small heater (that didnt work) and a small gas camping stove. No fairy lights as advertised either. Beds were comfy but bottom valance sheets were unwashed. Floor was damp. I realise this can’t be helped in a tent but no effort had been made to cover the big muddy puddle right at the entrance to the tent. At around 11pm myself, my 24 year old son, my 18 year old daughter, and my 7 year old daughter made our way to the toilet block next to the 'bar' to brush our teeth before bed. The lights didn't work in either of the toilets (apparently due to other campers leaving the lights on before us - they are solar powered – in which case I think the solar power system needs to be changed pronto!) On our way back to our tent we were almost knocked over and killed by a local man driving down the dirt track to the bar at a dangerously high speed!! I had to literally push my small daughter out of the way of the car! He was driving so fast he didn't see us - even with our torches on! He skidded to a halt outside the bar and when I shouted out to him he approached us and looked shocked and he profusely apologized and explained it was his 'local' but it was too little too late. That made my mind up I was leaving as soon as possible the next morning. That, and the fact that the tents are actually pitched just a hedge away from a road so you can hear passing cars all night. In day light, it was clear to see the place has been neglected. There was broken furniture and broken fairy lights in the outside seating area by the bar and everything looked worn and uncared for. The bar itself is not 'family friendly' and is obviously just a meeting point for local lads and not equipped for children atall. The small play park looked ok (albeit worn) but the whole place had a weird vibe and there were police cones everywhere and we noticed there were no signs asking drivers to drive carefully nor under 10mph, which might explain the near miss the night before. Myself and my children couldn't wait to get out of there. The campers next door to us had a bad experience too - a dog found its way into their tent at 4am and stood growling at them until they managed to shoo it away! We are very used to wild camping so it was not a case of us expecting luxuries - we just expected a polite welcome, facilities as advertised, and a more natural environment. We were gone by 8.30am the very next day (we were supposed to be staying for three nights) and I am so pleased I did not pay the full balance as I suspect I would've struggled to get a refund.

Bell tent

Liked: I liked the location.

Disliked: Didn’t like the bell tents as they had no log burners in as shown on their photos on website!

From the manager: A very disappointing review especially as extra blankets and toys were supplied in advance of guests arriving in view that they had very young children. The toilets are cleaned every day and this is the first negative comment we have ever had regarding the toilets. The log burner shown in the photo is from a guest's photo taken last year which I cannot remove from the site. If the guests would have mentioned the wood burner the guests would have been given a portable heater immediately instead of messing the beds and leaving without paying a penny.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Honestly we cannot fault our stay here, the hosts were very attentive to all their guests needs, very friendly and chatty, not just with the adults but the kids too. They go above and beyond to make sure your happy and comfortable. The animals were a lovely touch and they have no issue with people saying hello to them and giving them a pet, which the kids loved. There's a very unique and quirky bar that they created from a horse box with extremely reasonable prices, a good choice of beverages and snacks, including hot drinks. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas for all weathers, where they put out a TV to show the football for other campers during the game. They have toilets and showers available which were restocked and tidied daily for people's needs, I would say all are of a decent size and easily accessible. I honestly cannot fault a single thing, the views are incredible the space and the environment was welcoming and friendly and just beautiful, as well as peaceful. Not only would I strongly recommend this to other campers looking for somewhere to pitch up, we as a family will be returning because the place and the people running it all left quite an impression on all of us. The best moment for the kids, was when they got offered a ride on their quad bike (at an appropriate slow and steady speed, driven by the owner).....cannot praise them enough for their relaxed, clean and friendly environment.

Local attractions

You don’t need to be an adrenaline junkie to appreciate the rides at Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes’ drive). They’re likely to raise your pulse a little, that's for sure, but those of you with kids who require rides that are a little more low-key might want to visit Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (25 minutes) too. That’s not the only way to pack some action into your stay, though, as the outdoors is just the place for delving into more activities. To start off slow, perhaps walks and wildlife spotting followed by a hot brew at the Welsh Wildlife Centre (half an hour)? Then, hiking, fishing or coasteering somewhere along the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (30 minutes)? Or full-on watersports, such as canoeing on the Afon Teifi (30 minutes)? More on that outdoors you’ll have around you… waterfall hikes are the thing of Cenarth Falls (25 minutes), while Cardigan (25 minutes) is suited for dipping your toes into beach sports, crafts or shopping on the shore. For that look at the battles of times gone instead, the National Trust’s 13th-century Cilgerran Castle (20 minutes) is the place to do that.
