Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Cwmsoar was a lovely spot for the night, lovely views around and horses in the opposite field which my daughter enjoyed. The toilets were clean and there were fire pits and logs available to rent. The gate is locked overnight so the site is secure. Sue met us on arrival and seemed very friendly. There is a handy information sheet with directions to the lake and local pubs/shops etc. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Disliked: A rubbish bin could have been handy but we didn't mind taking ours home. To walk to the lake requires walking down the lane a short way which is not necessarily a fault but some cars came along quite fast and it was a bit hairy with my daughter and my dog.

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
