Family-friendly park

  • Well-maintained friendly park five minutes' drive from Llantwit Major
  • A 10-minute drive from the coast and half an hour from Cardiff
  • A short walk from a go-karting circuit for adults and older kids
Coast days, castle trips, Cardiff wanderings and a cluster of family-friendly attractions… it’s safe to say that there’s plenty to do in the area around Llandow Touring Caravan Park. This spacious south Wales spot is surrounded by field and farm, giving it a sheltered and secluded vibe that’s fab for a family break; a warm welcome awaits here for all, including kids and holidaying hounds. Both have been catered for on the playtime front too – there’s a fenced-off play area for the kids and a dog run area for the pups. And as over-tired tiddlers are no fun for anyone, the site also enforces a noise curfew to give a good chance of peaceful slumbers for all. The park’s not as middle-of-nowhere as its rural backdrop may suggest – restaurants, pubs, shops and other handy bits and bobs are less than 10 minutes’ drive away in Cowbridge (to the north) or Llantwit Major (to the south); there’s also a well-stocked shop on site for times when you just fancy taking it easy. Beach days and coastal walks (both with mighty fine views) are about 10 minutes' drive away. For active types, a go-karting centre is within strolling distance and surf lessons, horse riding and golf within a 15-minute drive. Cardiff city centre’s about a half-hour drive away: take a train from Llantwit Major if you fancy leaving the wheels behind.

Liked: Facilities were very good and the pitch size was brilliant.

Disliked: Not the campsite fault but the noise from the road and the boy-racers wheel spinning late at night which was right behind us.

Liked: Good site with friendly and helpful staff. Lots of seasonal in the main field, but that shows that folk like the site for very many reasons. Safe for young children to play with good spaces suitable for them. This was the first time we took our two granddaughters with us in the last tourer and it was a good choice of site. Visited the beach at BarryBados 👍 Easy site to drive to which is not always the case, good link from A48 on part new bypass around Cowbridge. Happy to return next year.

Liked: We stayed here last year and absolutely loved the site, its a great location if you're going to Barry Island/gavin and stacey tour. We brought my parents this time with their motorhome. We originally booked for 4 nights but ended up staying an extra 2 nights. The site has everything you need, a small shop, large toilet and shower block, pot wash room with washing machine and communal freezer and a play park. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. A 5 minute drive you will find a co-op a large supermarket, cafe, restaurant and takeaways.

Disliked: I don't have any dislikes

Liked: First time stay in touring caravan at Llandow. Needed a relatively close site for a couple of nights for grandkids which they thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely trips to local beaches.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Nice reception building, good pot wash and book exchange library.

Disliked: Not often we say this about a site, but honestly it wasn’t for us. This site is mainly catering to the seasonal touring pitch holders, who individually decorate their pitches. This gives a certain feel to the park and makes it feel and look unkempt, feeling a bit like a traveller site. Lots of weeds on the gravel and long grass around the seasonal caravans. The toilet block is functional but dated. The female warden did not return a hello or morning and instead looked right through us, despite chatting away to seasonal pitch holders, although not expecting hugs and kisses, a response to good morning would have been nice. The race track didn’t bother us but there is nothing to do in the local area and the road is too fast and busy with no pavement to be able to walk out or cycle from site, so you really need to drive a distance for a day out as there is nothing on site.

Local attractions

To the beach – but first, a choice: shall it be nearby Nash Point (10 minutes’ drive) for paddles and dog walks around the lighthouse, or will you rise early for a beachside brekkie at Llantwit Major’s beachside café? Maybe you want to hit the surf at Southerndown (15 minutes); lessons can be had down there for folk who haven’t quite got the knack of standing on a board. Or perhaps you’ll head off to Ogmore (15 minutes) to fulfil that dream of riding a horse on the sands... Choices await castle-seekers too – Castell Coch, Caerphilly Castle and Ogmore Castle are all within 40 minutes’ drive. Dyffryn Gardens is 25 minutes away if you’re more about the outdoors, or you could try the Welsh Hawking Centre (20 minutes) to see the big birds take flight. Should your favourite outdoor view involve a glass of wine, you’re in luck: Llanerch Vineyard and Glyndwr Vineyard are both within a half-hour drive. Speed-seeking sorts (adults and kids over eight) will no doubt want to take to the track at the South Wales Karting Centre: it’s a 10-minute stroll from the site, and with an excellent café to take care of any non-driving companions.
